Which five? One gives to a newcomer. One gives to one going away. One gives to one who is ill. One gives in time of famine. One sets the first fruits of field & orchard in front of those who are virtuous. These are the five seasonable gifts.\"\nIn the proper season they give -- \n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 those with discernment,\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 responsive, free from stinginess.\nHaving been given in proper season,\nwith hearts inspired by the Noble Ones\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 -- straightened, Such -- \ntheir offering bears an abundance.\nThose who rejoice in that gift\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 or give assistance,\nthey, too, have a share of the merit,\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 and the offering isn't depleted by that.\nSo, with an unhesitant mind,\none should give where the gift bears great fruit.\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Merit is what establishes\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 living beings in the next life.\nRevised: Sat 17 October 1998","title":"AN V.36: Kaladana Sutta","type":"page"}
