{"collection":"Buddhism","html_url":"https://unchartedknowledge.5gfusion.net/browse/bud/dhp/1.htm","path":"bud/dhp/1.htm","source_url":"https://sacred-texts.com/bud/dhp/1.htm","text":"Phenomena are \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 preceded by the heart,\nruled by the heart,\nmade of the heart.\nIf you speak or act\nwith a corrupted heart,\nthen suffering follows you --\nas the wheel of the cart,\nthe track of the ox\nthat pulls it.\nPhenomena are \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 preceded by the heart,\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 ruled by the heart,\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 made of the heart. \nIf you speak or act \nwith a calm, bright heart,\nthen happiness follows you,\nlike a shadow \n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 that never leaves.\n3-6:\n'He \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 insulted me,\nhit me,\nbeat me,\nrobbed me'\n-- for those who brood on this,\nhostility isn't stilled.\n'He insulted me, \nhit me, \nbeat me, \nrobbed me' -- \nfor those who don't brood on this,\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 hostility is stilled.\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Hostilities aren't stilled \n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 through hostility, \n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 regardless.\nHostilities are stilled \nthrough non-hostility:\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 this, an unending truth.\nUnlike those who don't realize\nthat we're here on the verge \n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 of perishing,\nthose who do:\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 their quarrels are stilled.\nOne who stays focused on the beautiful,\nis unrestrained with the senses,\nknowing no moderation in food,\napathetic, unenergetic:\nMara overcomes him\nas the wind, a weak tree.\nOne who stays focused on the foul,\nis restrained with regard to the senses,\nknowing moderation in food,\nfull of conviction & energy:\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Mara does not overcome him\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 as the wind, a mountain of rock.\n9-10:\nHe who, \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 depraved,\ndevoid\nof truthfulness\n& self-control,\nputs on the ochre robe,\ndoesn't deserve the ochre robe.\nBut he who is free\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 of depravity\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 endowed\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 with truthfulness \n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 & self-control,\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 well-established\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 in the precepts,\ntruly deserves the ochre robe.\nThose who regard \nnon-essence as essence\nand see essence as non-,\ndon't get to the essence,\nranging about in wrong resolves.\nBut those who know \nessence as essence,\nand non-essence as non-,\nget to the essence,\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 ranging about in right resolves.\n13-14:\nAs rain seeps into\nan ill-thatched hut,\nso passion,\nthe undeveloped mind.\nAs rain doesn't seep into\na well-thatched hut,\nso passion does not, \n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 the well-developed mind.\nHere \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 he grieves\nhe grieves hereafter.\nIn both worlds\nthe wrong-doer grieves.\nHe grieves, he's afflicted,\nseeing the corruption\nof his deeds.\nHere \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 he rejoices\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 he rejoices \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 hereafter.\nIn both worlds \nthe merit-maker rejoices.\nHe rejoices, is jubilant,\nseeing the purity \n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 of his deeds.\nHere \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 he's tormented\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 he's tormented \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 hereafter.\nIn both worlds \nthe wrong-doer's tormented.\nHe's tormented at the thought,\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 'I've done wrong.'\nHaving gone to a bad destination,\nhe's tormented \n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 all the more.\nHere \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 he delights\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 he delights \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 hereafter.\nIn both worlds \nthe merit-maker delights.\nHe delights at the thought,\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 'I've made merit.'\nHaving gone to a good destination,\nhe delights \n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 all the more.\n19-20:\nIf he recites many teachings, but\n-- heedless man --\ndoesn't do what they say,\nlike a cowherd counting the cattle of\nothers,\nhe has no share in the contemplative life.\nIf he recites next to nothing\nbut follows the Dhamma \nin line with the Dhamma;\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 abandoning passion, \n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 aversion, delusion;\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 alert, \n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 his mind well-released,\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 not clinging \n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 either here or hereafter:\nhe has his share in the contemplative life.","title":"Dhammapada I: Pairs","type":"page"}
