{"collection":"Buddhism","html_url":"https://unchartedknowledge.5gfusion.net/browse/bud/dhp/14.htm","path":"bud/dhp/14.htm","source_url":"https://sacred-texts.com/bud/dhp/14.htm","text":"179-180:\nWhose conquest can't be undone,\nwhose conquest no one in the world\ncan reach;\nawakened, his pasture endless,\npathless:\nby what path will you lead him astray?\nIn whom there's no craving\n-- the sticky ensnarer -- \nto lead him anywherever at all;\nawakened, his pasture endless,\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 pathless:\nby what path will you lead him astray?\n181:\nThey, the enlightened, intent on jhana,\ndelighting in stilling\n& renunciation,\nself-awakened & mindful:\neven the devas\nview them with envy.\n182:\nHard \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 the winning of a human birth.\nHard the life of mortals.\nHard the chance to hear the true Dhamma.\nHard the arising of Awakened Ones.\nThe non-doing \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 of any evil,\nthe performance of what's skillful,\nthe cleansing of one's own mind:\nthis is the teaching\nof the Awakened.\nPatient endurance:\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 the foremost austerity.\nUnbinding:\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 the foremost,\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 so say the Awakened.\nHe who injures another\nis no contemplative.\nHe who mistreats another,\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 no monk.\nNot disparaging, not injuring,\nrestraint \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 in line with the Patimokkha,\nmoderation \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 in food,\ndwelling \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 in seclusion,\ncommitment \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 to the heightened mind:\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 this is the teaching \n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 of the Awakened.\n186-187:\nNot even if it rained gold coins\nwould we have our fill\nof sensual pleasures.\n'Stressful,\nthey give little enjoyment' --\nknowing this, the wise one\nfinds no delight\neven in heavenly sensual pleasures.\nHe is one who delights\nin the ending of craving,\na disciple of the Rightly\nSelf-Awakened One.\nThey go to many a refuge,\nto mountains and forests,\nto park and tree shrines:\npeople threatened with danger.\nThat's not the secure refuge,\nnot the supreme refuge,\nthat's not the refuge,\nhaving gone to which,\nyou gain release\nfrom all suffering & stress.\nBut when, having gone \nto the Buddha, Dhamma, \n& Sangha for refuge,\nyou see with right discernment\nthe four noble truths -- \n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 stress,\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 the cause of stress,\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 the transcending of stress,\n& the noble eightfold path,\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 the way to the stilling of stress: \nthat's the secure refuge,\nthat, the supreme refuge,\nthat is the refuge, \nhaving gone to which,\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 you gain release \n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 from all suffering & stress. \n193:\nIt's hard to come by\na thoroughbred of a man.\nIt's simply not true\nthat he's born everywhere.\nWherever he's born, an enlightened one,\nthe family prospers,\nis happy.\n194:\nA blessing: \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 the arising of Awakened Ones.\nA blessing: the teaching of true Dhamma.\nA blessing: the concord of the Sangha.\nThe austerity of those in concord\nis a blessing.\nIf you worship those worthy of worship,\n-- Awakened Ones or their disciples --\nwho've transcended\ncomplications,\nlamentation,\n& grief,\nwho are unendangered,\nfearless,\nunbound:\nthere's no measure for reckoning\nthat your merit's 'this much.'","title":"Dhammapada XIV: Awakened","type":"page"}
