{"collection":"Buddhism","html_url":"https://unchartedknowledge.5gfusion.net/browse/bud/dhp/17.htm","path":"bud/dhp/17.htm","source_url":"https://sacred-texts.com/bud/dhp/17.htm","text":"221:\nAbandon anger,\nbe done with conceit,\nget beyond every fetter.\nWhen for name & form\nyou have no attachment\n-- have nothing at all --\nno sufferings, no stresses, invade.\n222:\nWhen anger arises,\nwhoever keeps firm control\nas if with a racing chariot:\nhim\nI call a master charioteer.\nAnyone else,\na rein-holder --\nthat's all.\n223:\nConquer anger\nwith lack of anger;\nbad, with good;\nstinginess, with generosity;\na liar, with truth.\n224:\nBy telling the truth;\nby not growing angry;\nby giving, when asked,\nno matter how little you have:\nby these three things\nyou enter the presence of devas.\n225:\nGentle sages,\nconstantly restrained in body,\ngo to the unwavering state\nwhere, having gone,\nthere's no grief.\n226:\nThose who always stay wakeful,\ntraining by day & by night,\nkeen on Unbinding:\ntheir effluents come to an end.\n227-228:\nThis has come down from old, Atula,\n& not just from today:\nthey find fault with one\nwho sits silent,\nthey find fault with one\nwho speaks a great deal,\nthey find fault with one\nwho measures his words.\nThere's no one unfaulted in the world.\nThere never was,\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 will be,\nnor at present is found\nanyone entirely faulted\nor entirely praised.\n229-230:\nIf knowledgeable people praise him,\nhaving observed him\nday after day\nto be blameless in conduct, intelligent,\nendowed with discernment & virtue:\nlike an ingot of gold --\nwho's fit to find fault with him?\nEven devas praise him.\nEven by Brahmas he's praised.\nGuard against anger \nerupting in body;\nin body, be restrained.\nHaving abandoned bodily misconduct,\nlive conducting yourself well\nin body.\nGuard against anger \nerupting in speech;\nin speech, be restrained.\nHaving abandoned verbal misconduct,\nlive conducting yourself well\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 in speech.\nGuard against anger\nerupting in mind;\nin mind, be restrained.\nHaving abandoned mental misconduct, \nlive conducting yourself well\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 in mind.\nThose restrained in body \n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 -- the enlightened -- \nrestrained in speech & in mind\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 -- enlightened -- \nare the ones whose restraint is secure.","title":"Dhammapada XVII: Anger","type":"page"}
