Be wise!\nWith impurities all blown away,\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 unblemished,\nyou won't again undergo birth \n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 & aging.\n239:\nJust as a silver smith\nstep by\nstep,\nbit by\nbit,\nmoment to\nmoment,\nblows away the impurities\nof molten silver --\nso the wise man, his own.\n240*:\nJust as rust\n-- iron's impurity --\neats the very iron\nfrom which it is born,\nso the deeds\nof one who lives slovenly\nlead him on\nto a bad destination.\n241-243:\nNo recitation: the ruinous impurity \nof chants.\nNo initiative: of a household.\nIndolence: of beauty.\nHeedlessness: of a guard.\nIn a woman, misconduct is an impurity.\nIn a donor, stinginess.\nEvil deeds are the real impurities\nin this world & the next.\nMore impure than these impurities\nis the ultimate impurity:\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 ignorance.\nHaving abandoned this impurity,\nmonks, you're impurity-free.\n244-245:\nLife's easy to live\nfor someone unscrupulous,\ncunning as a crow,\ncorrupt, back-biting,\nforward, & brash;\nbut for someone who's constantly\nscrupulous, cautious,\nobservant, sincere,\npure in his livelihood,\nclean in his pursuits,\nit's hard.\n246-248:\nWhoever kills, lies, steals,\ngoes to someone else's wife,\n& is addicted to intoxicants,\ndigs himself up\nby the root\nright here in this world.\nSo know, my good man,\nthat bad deeds are reckless.\nDon't let greed & unrighteousness\noppress you with long-term pain.\n249-250:\nPeople give \nin line with their faith,\nin line with conviction.\nWhoever gets flustered\nat food & drink given to others,\nattains no concentration\nby day or by night.\nBut one in whom this is\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 cut \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 through\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 up- \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 rooted\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 wiped out -- \nattains concentration\nby day or by night.\n251:\nThere's no fire like passion,\nno seizure like anger,\nno snare like delusion,\nno river like craving.\n252-253:\nIt's easy to see\nthe errors of others,\nbut hard to see\nyour own.\nYou winnow like chaff\nthe errors of others,\nbut conceal your own --\nlike a cheat, an unlucky throw.\nIf you focus on the errors of others,\nconstantly finding fault,\nyour effluents flourish.\nYou're far from their ending.\nThere's no trail in space,\nno outside contemplative.\nPeople are smitten\nwith complications,\nbut devoid of complication are\nthe Tathagatas.\nThere's no trail in space,\nno outside contemplative,\nno eternal fabrications,\nno wavering in the Awakened.","title":"Dhammapada XVIII: Impurities","type":"page"}
