{"collection":"Buddhism","html_url":"https://unchartedknowledge.5gfusion.net/browse/bud/dhp/19.htm","path":"bud/dhp/19.htm","source_url":"https://sacred-texts.com/bud/dhp/19.htm","text":"To pass judgment hurriedly\ndoesn't mean you're a judge.\nThe wise one who weighs\nthe right judgment & wrong,\nthe intelligent one\nwho judges others impartially,\nunhurriedly, in line with the Dhamma,\nguarding the Dhamma,\nguarded by Dhamma:\nhe's called a judge.\nSimply talking a lot\ndoesn't mean one is wise.\nWhoever's secure --\nno hostility,\nfear --\nis said to be wise.\nSimply talking a lot\ndoesn't maintain the Dhamma.\nWhoever\n-- although he's heard next to nothing -- \n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 sees Dhamma through his body, \n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 is not heedless of Dhamma:\nhe's one who maintains the Dhamma.\n260-261:\nA head of gray hairs\ndoesn't mean one's an elder.\nAdvanced in years,\none's called an old fool.\nBut one in whom there is\ntruth, restraint,\nrectitude, gentleness,\nself-control --\nhe's called an elder,\nhis impurities disgorged,\nenlightened.\n262-263:\nNot by suave conversation\nor lotus-like coloring\ndoes an envious, miserly cheat\nbecome an exemplary man.\nBut one in whom this is\ncut through\nup- rooted\nwiped out --\nhe's called exemplary,\nhis aversion disgorged,\nintelligent.\nA shaven head\ndoesn't mean a contemplative.\nThe liar observing no duties,\nfilled with greed & desire:\nwhat kind of contemplative's he?\nBut whoever tunes out \nthe dissonance\nof his evil qualities\n-- large or small -- \nin every way\nby bringing evil to consonance:\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 he's called a contemplative.\n266-267:\nBegging from others\ndoesn't mean one's a monk.\nAs long as one follows\nhouseholders' ways,\none is no monk at all.\nBut whoever puts aside\nboth merit & evil and,\nliving the chaste life,\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 judiciously\ngoes through the world:\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 he's called a monk.\nNot by silence \ndoes someone confused\n& unknowing\nturn into a sage.\nBut whoever -- wise,\nas if holding the scales,\ntaking the excellent --\nrejects evil deeds:\nhe is a sage,\nthat's how he's a sage.\nWhoever can weigh\nboth sides of the world:\nthat's how he's called\na sage.\n270:\nNot by harming life\ndoes one become noble.\nOne is termed noble\nfor being gentle\nto all living things.\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Monk,\ndon't\non account of\nyour precepts & practices,\ngreat erudition,\nconcentration attainments,\nsecluded dwelling,\nor the thought, 'I touch\nthe renunciate ease\nthat run-of-the-mill people\ndon't know':\never let yourself get complacent\nwhen the ending of effluents\nis still unattained.","title":"Dhammapada XIX: The Judge","type":"page"}
