{"collection":"Buddhism","html_url":"https://unchartedknowledge.5gfusion.net/browse/bud/dhp/2.htm","path":"bud/dhp/2.htm","source_url":"https://sacred-texts.com/bud/dhp/2.htm","text":"Heedfulness: \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 the path to the Deathless.\nHeedlessness: the path to death.\nThe heedful do not die.\nThe heedless are as if\nalready dead.\nKnowing this as a true distinction,\nthose wise in heedfulness\nrejoice \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 in heedfulness,\nenjoying the range of the noble ones.\nThe enlightened, constantly \n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 absorbed in jhana,\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 persevering,\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 firm in their effort:\nthey touch Unbinding,\nthe unexcelled safety\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 from bondage.\nThose with initiative,\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 mindful,\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 clean in action,\nacting with due consideration,\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 heedful, restrained,\nliving the Dhamma:\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 their glory \n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 grows.\n25:\nThrough initiative, heedfulness,\nrestraint, & self-control,\nthe wise would make\nan island\nno flood\ncan submerge.\n26:\nThey're addicted to heedlessness\n-- dullards, fools --\nwhile one who is wise\ncherishes heedfulness\nas his highest wealth.\n27:\nDon't give way to heedlessness\nor to intimacy\nwith sensual delight --\nfor a heedful person,\nabsorbed in jhana,\nattains an abundance of ease.\n28:\nWhen the wise person drives out\nheedlessness\nwith heedfulness,\nhaving climbed the high tower\nof discernment,\nsorrow-free,\nhe observes the sorrowing crowd --\nas the enlightened man,\nhaving scaled\na summit,\nthe fools on the ground below.\n29:\nHeedful among the heedless,\nwakeful among those asleep,\njust as a fast horse advances,\nleaving the weak behind:\nso the wise.\n30:\nThrough heedfulness, Indra won\nto lordship over the gods.\nHeedfulness is praised,\nheedlessness censured --\nalways.\n31-32:\nThe monk delighting in heedfulness,\nseeing danger in heedlessness,\nadvances like a fire,\nburning fetters\ngreat & small.\nThe monk delighting in heedfulness,\nseeing danger in heedlessness\n-- incapable of falling back -- \nstands right on the verge\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 of Unbinding.","title":"Dhammapada II: Heedfulness","type":"page"}
