{"collection":"Buddhism","html_url":"https://unchartedknowledge.5gfusion.net/browse/bud/dhp/20.htm","path":"bud/dhp/20.htm","source_url":"https://sacred-texts.com/bud/dhp/20.htm","text":"273*:\nOf paths, the eightfold is best.\nOf truths, the four sayings.\nOf qualities, dispassion.\nOf two-footed beings,\nthe one with the eyes\nto see.\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Just this \nis the path\n-- there is no other --\nto purify vision.\nFollow it,\nand that will be Mara's\nbewilderment.\nFollowing it,\nyou put an end \nto suffering & stress.\nI have taught you this path\nfor knowing\nthe extraction of arrows.\nIt's for you to strive \n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 ardently.\nTathagatas simply \npoint out the way.\nThose who practice, \nabsorbed in jhana:\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 from Mara's bonds\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 they'll be freed.\nWhen you see with discernment,\n'All fabrications are inconstant' --\nyou grow disenchanted with stress.\nThis is the path\nto purity.\nWhen you see with discernment,\n'All fabrications are stressful' -- \nyou grow disenchanted with stress.\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 This is the path \n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 to purity.\nWhen you see with discernment,\n'All phenomena are not-self' -- \nyou grow disenchanted with stress.\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 This is the path \n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 to purity.\n280:\nAt the time for initiative\nhe takes no initiative.\nYoung, strong, but lethargic,\nthe resolves of his heart\nexhausted,\nthe lazy, lethargic one\nloses the path\nto discernment.\n281:\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Guarded \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 in speech,\nwell-restrained in body & mind,\ndo nothing unskillful.\nPurify\nthese three courses of action.\nBring to fruition\nthe path that seers have proclaimed.\n282:\nFrom striving comes wisdom;\nfrom not, wisdom's end.\nKnowing these two courses\n-- to development,\ndecline --\nconduct yourself\nso that wisdom will grow.\nCut down \nthe forest of desire,\nnot the forest of trees.\nFrom the forest of desire\ncome danger & fear.\nHaving cut down this forest\n& its underbrush, monks,\nbe deforested.\nFor as long as the least\nbit of underbrush\nof a man for women\nis not cleared away,\nthe heart is fixated\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 like a suckling calf \n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 on its mother.\nCrush \nyour sense of self-allure\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 like an autumn lily\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 in the hand.\nNurture only the path to peace\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 -- Unbinding -- \nas taught by the One Well Gone.\n'Here I'll stay for the rains.\nHere, for the summer & winter.'\nSo imagines the fool,\nunaware of obstructions.\nThat drunk-on-his-sons-&-cattle man,\nall tangled up in the mind:\ndeath sweeps him away -- \n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 as a great flood,\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 a village asleep.\nThere are \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 no sons\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 to give shelter,\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 no father,\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 no family\nfor one seized by the Ender,\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 no shelter among kin.\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Conscious \nof this compelling reason,\nthe wise man, restrained by virtue,\nshould make the path pure\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 -- right away -- \nthat goes all the way to Unbinding.","title":"Dhammapada XX: The Path","type":"page"}
