{"collection":"Buddhism","html_url":"https://unchartedknowledge.5gfusion.net/browse/bud/dhp/22.htm","path":"bud/dhp/22.htm","source_url":"https://sacred-texts.com/bud/dhp/22.htm","text":"306:\nHe goes to hell,\nthe one who asserts\nwhat didn't take place,\nas does the one\nwho, having done,\nsays, 'I didn't.'\nBoth -- low-acting people --\nthere become equal:\nafter death, in the world beyond.\n307-308:\nAn ochre robe tied 'round their necks,\nmany with evil qualities\n-- unrestrained, evil --\nrearise, because of their evil acts,\nin hell.\nBetter to eat an iron ball\n-- glowing, aflame -- \nthan that, unprincipled &\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 unrestrained,\nyou should eat the alms of the country.\n309-310:\nFour things befall the heedless man\nwho lies down with the wives of others:\na wealth of demerit;\na lack of good sleep;\nthird, censure;\nfourth, hell.\nA wealth of demerit, an evil destination,\n& the brief delight of a \n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 fearful man with a \n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 fearful woman,\n& the king inflicts a harsh punishment.\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 So\nno man should lie down \nwith the wife of another.\n311-314:\nJust as sharp-bladed grass,\nif wrongly held,\nwounds the very hand that holds it --\nthe contemplative life, if wrongly grasped,\ndrags you down to hell.\nAny slack act,\nor defiled observance,\nor fraudulent life of chastity\nbears no great fruit.\nIf something's to be done,\nthen work at it firmly,\nfor a slack going-forth\nkicks up all the more dust.\nIt's better to leave a misdeed \n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 undone.\nA misdeed burns you afterward.\nBetter that a good deed be done\nthat, after you've done it,\nwon't make you burn.\n315:\nLike a frontier fortress,\nguarded inside & out,\nguard yourself.\nDon't let the moment pass by.\nThose for whom the moment is past\ngrieve, consigned to hell.\n316-319:\nAshamed of what's not shameful,\nnot ashamed of what is,\nbeings adopting wrong views\ngo to a bad destination.\nSeeing danger where there is none,\n& no danger where there is,\nbeings adopting wrong views\ngo to a bad destination.\nSeeing error where there is none,\n& no error where there is,\nbeings adopting wrong views\ngo to a bad destination.\nBut knowing error as error,\nand non-error as non-,\nbeings adopting right views\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 go to a good \n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 destination.","title":"Dhammapada XXII: Hell","type":"page"}
