{"collection":"Buddhism","html_url":"https://unchartedknowledge.5gfusion.net/browse/bud/dhp/25.htm","path":"bud/dhp/25.htm","source_url":"https://sacred-texts.com/bud/dhp/25.htm","text":"Restraint with the eye is good,\ngood is restraint with the ear.\nRestraint with the nose is good,\ngood is restraint with the tongue.\nRestraint with the body is good,\ngood is restraint with speech.\nRestraint with the heart is good,\ngood is restraint everywhere.\nA monk everywhere restrained\nis released from all suffering & stress.\n362:\nHands restrained,\nfeet restrained\nspeech restrained,\nsupremely restrained --\ndelighting in what is inward,\ncontent, centered, alone:\nhe's what they call\na monk.\n363*:\nA monk restrained in his speaking,\ngiving counsel unruffled,\ndeclaring the message & meaning:\nsweet is his speech.\n364:\nDhamma his dwelling,\nDhamma his delight,\na monk pondering Dhamma,\ncalling Dhamma to mind,\ndoes not fall away\nfrom true Dhamma.\n365-366:\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Gains:\ndon't treat your own with scorn,\ndon't go coveting those of others.\nA monk who covets those of others\nattains\nno concentration.\nEven if he gets next to nothing,\nhe doesn't treat his gains with scorn.\nLiving purely, untiring:\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 he's the one \n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 that the devas praise.\n367:\nFor whom, in name & form\nin every way,\nthere's no sense of mine,\n& who doesn't grieve\nfor what's not:\nhe's deservedly called\na monk.\n368*:\nDwelling in kindness, a monk\nwith faith in the Awakened One's teaching,\nwould attain the good state,\nthe peaceful state:\nstilling-of-fabrications ease.\n369*:\nMonk, bail out this boat.\nIt will take you lightly when bailed.\nHaving cut through passion, aversion,\nyou go from there to Unbinding.\n370*:\nCut through five,\nlet go of five,\n& develop five above all.\nA monk gone past five attachments\nis said to have crossed the flood.\n371:\nPractice jhana, monk,\nand don't be heedless.\nDon't take your mind roaming\nin sensual strands.\nDon't swallow -- heedless --\nthe ball of iron aflame.\nDon't burn & complain: 'This is pain.'\n372:\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 There's \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 no jhana\nfor one with no discernment,\nno discernment\nfor one with no jhana.\nBut one with both jhana\n& discernment:\nhe's on the verge\nof Unbinding.\n373-374:\nA monk with his mind at peace,\ngoing into an empty dwelling,\nclearly seeing the Dhamma aright:\nhis delight is more\nthan human.\nHowever it is,\nhowever it is he touches\nthe arising-&-passing of aggregates:\nhe gains rapture & joy:\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 that, for those who know it,\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 is deathless,\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 the Deathless.\n375-376:\nHere the first things\nfor a discerning monk\nare guarding the senses,\ncontentment,\nrestraint in line with the Patimokkha.\nHe should associate with admirable friends,\nliving purely, untiring,\nhospitable by habit,\nskilled in his conduct.\nGaining a manifold joy,\nhe will put an end\nto suffering & stress.\n377:\nShed passion\n& aversion, monks --\nas a jasmine would,\nits withered flowers.\n378:\nCalmed in body,\ncalmed in speech,\nwell-centered & calm,\nhaving disgorged the baits of the world,\na monk is called\nthoroughly\ncalmed.\n379:\nYou yourself should reprove yourself,\nshould examine yourself.\nAs a self-guarded monk\nwith guarded self,\nmindful, you dwell at ease.\n380:\nYour own self is\nyour own mainstay.\nYour own self is\nyour own guide.\nTherefore you should\nwatch over yourself --\nas a trader, a fine steed.\n381*:\nA monk with a manifold joy,\nwith faith in the Awakened One's teaching,\nwould attain the good state,\nthe peaceful state:\nstilling-of-fabrications ease.\n382:\nA young monk who strives\nin the Awakened One's teaching,\nbrightens the world\nlike the moon set free from a cloud.","title":"Dhammapada XXV: Monks","type":"page"}
