{"collection":"Buddhism","html_url":"https://unchartedknowledge.5gfusion.net/browse/bud/dhp/5.htm","path":"bud/dhp/5.htm","source_url":"https://sacred-texts.com/bud/dhp/5.htm","text":"60:\nLong for the wakeful is the night.\nLong for the weary, a league.\nFor fools\nunaware of True Dhamma,\nsamsara\nis long.\n61:\nIf, in your course, you don't meet\nyour equal, your better,\nthen continue your course,\nfirmly,\nalone.\nThere's no fellowship with fools.\n62:\n'I have sons, I have wealth' -- \nthe fool torments himself.\nWhen even he himself\ndoesn't belong to himself,\nhow then sons?\nHow wealth?\n63:\nA fool with a sense of his foolishness\nis -- at least to that extent -- wise.\nBut a fool who thinks himself wise\nreally deserves to be called\na fool.\n64-65:\nEven if for a lifetime\nthe fool stays with the wise,\nhe knows nothing of the Dhamma --\nas the ladle,\nthe taste of the soup.\nEven if for a moment,\nthe perceptive person stays with the wise,\nhe immediately knows the Dhamma -- \n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 as the tongue,\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 the taste of the soup.\n66:\nFools, their wisdom weak,\nare their own enemies\nas they go through life,\ndoing evil\nthat bears\nbitter fruit.\n67-68:\nIt's not good,\nthe doing of the deed\nthat, once it's done,\nyou regret,\nwhose result you reap crying,\nyour face in tears.\nIt's good,\nthe doing of the deed\nthat, once it's done, \nyou don't regret,\nwhose result you reap gratified,\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 happy at heart.\n69:\nAs long as evil has yet to ripen,\nthe fool mistakes it for honey.\nBut when that evil ripens,\nthe fool falls into\npain.\n70:\nMonth after month\nthe fool might eat\nonly a tip-of-grass measure of food,\nbut he wouldn't be worth\none sixteenth\nof those who've fathomed\nthe Dhamma.\n71*:\nAn evil deed, when done,\ndoesn't -- like ready milk --\ncome out right away.\nIt follows the fool,\nsmoldering\nlike a fire\nhidden in ashes.\n72-74:\nOnly for his ruin\ndoes renown come to the fool.\nIt ravages his bright fortune\n& rips his head apart.\nHe would want unwarranted status,\npreeminence \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 among monks,\nauthority \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 among monasteries,\nhomage \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 from lay families.\n'Let householders & those gone forth\nboth think that this \nwas done by me alone.\nMay I alone determine\nwhat's a duty, what's not':\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 the resolve of a fool\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 as they grow -- \n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 his desire & pride.\n75:\nThe path to material gain\ngoes one way,\nthe way to Unbinding,\nanother.\nRealizing this, the monk,\na disciple to the Awakened One,\nshould not relish offerings,\nshould cultivate seclusion\ninstead.","title":"Dhammapada V: Fools","type":"page"}
