{"collection":"Buddhism","html_url":"https://unchartedknowledge.5gfusion.net/browse/bud/dhp/6.htm","path":"bud/dhp/6.htm","source_url":"https://sacred-texts.com/bud/dhp/6.htm","text":"76-77:\nRegard him as one who\npoints out\ntreasure,\nthe wise one who\nseeing your faults\nrebukes you.\nStay with this sort of sage.\nFor the one who stays\nwith a sage of this sort,\nthings get better,\nnot worse.\nLet him admonish, instruct,\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 deflect you \naway from poor manners.\nTo the good, he's endearing;\nto the bad, he's not.\n78:\nDon't associate with bad friends.\nDon't associate with the low.\nAssociate with admirable friends.\nAssociate with the best.\n79*:\nDrinking the Dhamma,\nrefreshed by the Dhamma,\none sleeps at ease\nwith clear awareness & calm.\nIn the Dhamma revealed\nby the noble ones,\nthe wise person\nalways delights.\n80:\nIrrigators guide \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 the water.\nFletchers shape the arrow shaft.\nCarpenters shape the wood.\nThe wise control\nthemselves.\n81:\nAs a single slab of rock\nwon't budge in the wind,\nso the wise are not moved\nby praise,\nby blame.\n82:\nLike a deep lake,\nclear, unruffled, & calm:\nso the wise become clear,\ncalm,\non hearing words of the Dhamma.\n83*:\nEverywhere, truly,\nthose of integrity\nstand apart.\nThey, the good,\ndon't chatter in hopes\nof favor or gains.\nWhen touched\nnow by pleasure,\nnow pain,\nthe wise give no sign\nof high\nor low.\n84:\nOne who wouldn't -- \nnot for his own sake\nnor that of another --\nhanker for\nwealth,\na son,\na kingdom,\nhis own fulfillment,\nby unrighteous means:\nhe is righteous, rich\nin virtue,\ndiscernment.\nFew are the people\nwho reach the Far Shore.\nThese others\nsimply scurry along\nthis shore.\nBut those who practice Dhamma\nin line with the well-taught Dhamma,\nwill cross over the realm of Death\nso hard to transcend.\nForsaking dark practices, \n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 the wise person \nshould develop the bright,\nhaving gone from home \n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 to no-home\nin seclusion, so hard to enjoy.\nThere he should wish for delight,\ndiscarding sensuality -- \n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 he who has nothing.\nHe should cleanse himself -- wise -- \nof what defiles the mind.\nWhose minds are well-developed\nin the factors of self-awakening, \nwho delight in non-clinging,\nrelinquishing grasping -- \n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 resplendent,\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 their effluents ended:\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 they, in the world,\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 are Unbound.","title":"Dhammapada VI: The Wise","type":"page"}
