By \"acquisitions\" Mara means one's family and physical possessions. The Buddha uses the same word to mean a sense of possession for anything -- physical or mental -- at all.\nI have heard that on one occasion the Blessed One was staying near Savatthi in Jeta's Grove, Anathapindika's monastery. Then Mara the Evil One went to the Blessed One and recited this verse in his presence:\nThose with children\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 delight\nbecause of their children.\nThose with cattle\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 delight\nbecause of their cows.\nA person's delight\ncomes from acquisitions,\nsince a person with no acquisitions\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 doesn't delight.\n[The Buddha:]\nThose with children\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 grieve\nbecause of their children.\nThose with cattle\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 grieve\nbecause of their cows.\nA person's grief\ncomes from acquisitions,\nsince a person with no acquisitions\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 doesn't grieve.\nThen Mara the Evil One -- sad & dejected at realizing, \"The Blessed One knows me; the One Well-Gone knows me\" -- vanished right there.\nRevised: Sat 17 October 1998","title":"SN IV.8: Nandana Sutta","type":"page"}
