Emerging from that he entered the second jhana. Emerging from that, he entered the third...the fourth jhana...the sphere of the infinitude of space...the sphere of the infinitude of consciousness...the sphere of nothingness...the sphere of neither perception nor non-perception. Emerging from that, he entered the cessation of perception & feeling.\nThen emerging from the cessation of perception & feeling, he entered the sphere of neither perception nor non-perception. Emerging from that, he entered the sphere of nothingness...the sphere of the infinitude of consciousness...the sphere of the infinitude of space...the fourth jhana...the third...the second...the first jhana. Emerging from the first jhana he entered the second...the third...the fourth jhana. Emerging from the fourth jhana, he immediately was totally Unbound.\nWhen the Blessed One was totally Unbound, simultaneously with the total Unbinding, Sahampati Brahma uttered this verse:\nAll beings -- all -- in the world,\nwill cast off the bodily heap\nin the world\nwhere a Teacher like this\nwithout peer in the world\nthe Tathagata, with strength attained,\nthe Rightly Self-Awakened One,\nhas been totally\nUnbound.\nHow inconstant are compounded things!\nTheir nature: to arise & pass away.\nThey disband as they are arising.\nTheir total stilling is bliss.\nIt was awe-inspiring.\nIt was hair-raising\nwhen, displaying the foremost\naccomplishment in all things,\nthe Rightly Self-Awakened One\nwas totally Unbound.\nHe had no in-&-out breathing,\nthe one who was Such, the firm-minded one,\nimperturbable\n& bent on peace:\nthe sage completing his span.\nWith heart unbowed\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 he endured the pain.\nLike a flame's unbinding\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 was the liberation\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 of awareness.","title":"SN VI.15: Parinibbana Sutta","type":"page"}
