Now at that time a certain Bhikkhu had disease of the eyes. They used to carry that Bhikkhu out to ease himself. The Blessed One as he was passing through the Bhikkhus' sleeping quarters saw them [doing so]. When he saw them, he went up to the place where they were, and asked those Bhikkhus:\n'What is the disease, O Bhikkhus, from which this Bhikkhu suffers?'\n2. 'This venerable one, Lord, has disease of the eyes. Therefore do we carry him out to ease himself.'\nThen the Blessed One, on that account, having delivered a religious discourse, addressed the Bhikkhus, and said:\n'I allow, O Bhikkhus, the use of eye ointments 1; to wit, black collyrium 2, rasa ointment 3, sota ointment 4, geruka 5, and kapalla 6.'\nThey had need of perfumes to grind up into ointments.\n'I allow, O Bhikkhus, the use of sandal wood, tagara 1, black anus\u00e2ri 2, k\u00e2l\u00eeya 3, and bhaddamuttaka 4.'\n50:1 A\u00f1gana, which is here a generic term, inclusive of all the following; sabba-samg\u00e2hika-vakanam, says Buddhaghosa.\n50:2 K\u00e2la\u00f1ganan ti ek\u00e2 a\u00f1gana-g\u00e2ti (B.).\n50:3 Rasa\u00f1ganan ti n\u00e2n\u00e2-sambh\u00e2rehi katam (B.). B\u00f6htlingk-Roth say it is made with vitriol.\n50:4 Sota\u00f1ganan ti nadisot\u00e2disu uppagganakam a\u00f1ganam (B.). It is called in Sanskrit sroto\u00f1gana, and was made with antimony.\n50:5 Geruka is the Sanskrit gairika, ochre; and the kind meant is yellow ochre. Geruko n\u00e2ma suvanna-geruko, says Buddhaghosa. Compare the Sanskrit K\u00e2\u00f1kana-gairika and svarna-gairika.\n50:6 Kapallan ti d\u00eepa-sikh\u00e2to gahita-masi, 'soot taken from the flame of a lamp' (B.).\n51:1 Tagara as a fragrant flower is mentioned in verse 54 of the Dhammapada quoted in Milinda Pa\u00f1ha, p. 333.\n51:2 A kind of dark fragrant sandal wood.\n51:3 Read so in the text as corrected on p. 381.
