the heels of allurement, this pain.\nSeeing allurement's drawback,\nwander alone, a rhinoceros horn.\nOne whose mind\nis enmeshed in sympathy\nfor friends & companions,\nneglects the true goal.\nSeeing this danger in intimacy,\nwander alone, a rhinoceros horn.\nLike spreading bamboo,\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 entwined,\nis concern for offspring & spouses.\nLike a bamboo sprout,\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 unentangling,\nwander alone, a rhinoceros horn.\nAs a deer in the wilds,\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 unfettered,\ngoes for forage wherever it wants:\nthe wise person, valuing freedom,\nwanders alone, a rhinoceros horn.\nIn the midst of companions\n-- when staying at home,\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 when going out wandering -- \nyou are prey to requests.\nValuing the freedom\nthat no one else covets,\nwander alone, a rhinoceros horn.\nThere is sporting & love\nin the midst of companions,\n& abundant fondness for offspring.\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Feeling disgust\nat the prospect of parting\nfrom those who'd be dear,\nwander alone, a rhinoceros horn.\nWithout irritation in all four directions,\ncontent with whatever you get,\nenduring troubles with no dismay,\nwander alone, a rhinoceros horn.\nThey are hard to please,\nsome of those gone forth,\nas well as those living the household life.\nShedding concern\nfor these offspring of others,\nwander alone, a rhinoceros horn.\nCutting off the householder's marks,[1]\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 like a kovilara tree\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 that has shed its leaves,\nthe prudent one, cutting all household ties,\nwanders alone, a rhinoceros horn.\nIf you gain a mature companion,\na fellow traveler, right-living & wise,\novercoming all dangers\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 go with him, gratified,\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 mindful.\nIf you don't gain a mature companion,\na fellow traveler, right-living & wise,\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 go alone\nlike a king renouncing his kingdom,\nlike the elephant in the Matanga wilds,\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 his herd.\nWe praise companionship\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 -- yes!\nThose on a par, or better,\nshould be chosen as friends.\nIf they're not to be found,\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 living faultlessly,\nwander alone, a rhinoceros horn.\nSeeing radiant bracelets of gold,\nwell-made by a smith,\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 clinking, clashing,\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 two on an arm,\nwander alone, a rhinoceros horn,\n[Thinking:]\n\"In the same way,\nif I were to live with another,\nthere would be careless talk or abusive.\"\nSeeing this future danger,\nwander alone, a rhinoceros horn.\nBecause sensual pleasures,\nelegant, honeyed, & charming,\nbewitch the mind with their manifold forms -- \nseeing this drawback in sensual strands -- \nwander alone, a rhinoceros horn.\n\"Calamity, tumor, misfortune,\ndisease, an arrow, a danger for me.\"\nSeeing this danger in sensual strands,\nwander alone, a rhinoceros horn.\nCold & heat, hunger & thirst,\nwind & sun, horseflies & snakes:\nenduring all these, without exception,\nwander alone, a rhinoceros horn.\nAs a great white elephant,\nwith massive shoulders,\nrenouncing his herd,\nlives in the wilds wherever he wants,\nwander alone, a rhinoceros horn.\n\"There's no way\nthat one delighting in company\ncan touch even momentary release.\"\nHeeding the Solar Kinsman's words,\nwander alone, a rhinoceros horn.\nTranscending the intent on the out-of-tune way.\nDon't take as a friend\nsomeone heedless & hankering.\nWander alone, a rhinoceros horn.\nConsort with one who is learned,\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 who maintains the Dhamma,\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 a great & quick-witted friend.\nKnowing the meanings,\nsubdue your perplexity,\n[then] wander alone, a rhinoceros horn.\nFree from longing, finding no pleasure\nin the world's sport, love, or sensual bliss,\nabstaining from adornment,\nspeaking the truth,\nwander alone, a rhinoceros horn.\nAbandoning offspring, spouse,\nfather, mother,\nriches, grain, relatives,\n& sensual pleasures\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 altogether,\nwander alone, a rhinoceros horn.\n\"This is a bondage, a baited hook.\nThere's little happiness here,\nnext to no satisfaction,\nall the more suffering & pain.\"\nKnowing this, circumspect,\nwander alone, a rhinoceros horn.\nShattering fetters,\nlike a fish in the water tearing a net,\nlike a fire not coming back to what's burnt,\nwander alone, a rhinoceros horn.\nEyes downcast, not footloose,\nsenses guarded, with protected mind,\nnot oozing -- not burning -- with lust,\nwander alone, a rhinoceros horn.\nTaking off the householder's marks,[2]\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 like a coral tree\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 that has shed its leaves,\ngoing forth in the ochre robe,\nwander alone, a rhinoceros horn.\nShowing no greed for flavors, not careless,\ngoing from house to house for alms,\nwith mind unenmeshed in this family or that,\nwander alone, a rhinoceros horn.\nAbandoning barriers to awareness,\nexpelling all defilements -- all -- \nnon-dependent, cutting aversion,\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 allurement,\nwander alone, a rhinoceros horn.\nTurning your back on pleasure & pain,\nas earlier with sorrow & joy,\nattaining pure equanimity,\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 tranquillity,\nwander alone, a rhinoceros horn.\nWith persistence aroused\nfor the highest goal's attainment,\nwith mind unsmeared, not lazy in action,\nfirm in effort, with steadfastness & strength arisen,\nwander alone, a rhinoceros horn.\nNot neglecting seclusion, absorption,\nconstantly living the Dhamma\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 in line with the Dhamma,\ncomprehending the danger\nin states of becoming,\nwander alone, a rhinoceros horn.\nIntent on the ending of craving & heedful,\nlearned, mindful, not muddled,\ncertain -- having reckoned the Dhamma -- \n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 & striving,\nwander alone, a rhinoceros horn.\nUnstartled, \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 like a lion at sounds.\nUnsnared, \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 like the wind in a net.\nUnsmeared, like a lotus in water:\nwander alone, a rhinoceros horn.\nLike a lion -- forceful, strong in fang,\nliving as a conqueror, the king of beasts -- \nresort to a solitary dwelling.\nWander alone, a rhinoceros horn.\nAt the right time consorting\nwith the release through good will,\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 associate\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 for a motive.\nFriends without a motive these days\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 are rare.\nThey're shrewd for their own ends, & impure.\nWander alone, a rhinoceros
