{"collection":"Buddhism","html_url":"https://unchartedknowledge.5gfusion.net/browse/bud/snp/snp3-1.htm","path":"bud/snp/snp3-1.htm","source_url":"https://sacred-texts.com/bud/snp/snp3-1.htm","text":"I will describe the Going Forth,\nhow he, the One-with-Vision, went forth,\nhow he reasoned and chose the Going Forth.\n\"Household life is crowded,\na realm of dust,\nwhile going forth\nis the open air.\"\nSeeing this, he went forth.\nOn going forth,\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 he avoided evil deeds in body.\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Abandoning verbal misconduct,\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 he purified his livelihood.\nThen he, the Buddha, went to Rajagaha,\nthe mountain fortress of the Magadhans,\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 and wandered for alms,\nendowed with all the foremost marks.\nKing Bimbisara, standing in his palace, saw him,\nand on seeing him, consummate in marks,\nsaid: \"Look at this one, sirs.\nHow handsome, stately, pure!\nHow consummate his demeanor!\nMindful, his eyes downcast,\nlooking only a plow-length before him,\nas one who's not from a lowly lineage:\nSend the royal messengers at once\nto see where this monk will go.\"\nThey -- the messengers dispatched -- \nfollowed behind him.\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \"Where will this monk go?\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Where will his dwelling place be?\"\nAs he went from house to house -- \nwell-restrained, his sense-doors guarded,\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 mindful, alert -- \nhis bowl filled quickly.\nThen he, the sage, completing his alms round,\nleft the city, headed for Mount Pandava.\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \"That's where his dwelling will be.\"\nSeeing him go to his dwelling place,\nthree messengers sat down,\nwhile one returned to tell the king.\n\"That monk, your majesty,\non the flank of Pandava,\nsits like a tiger, a bull,\na lion in a mountain cleft.\"\nHearing the messenger's words,\nthe noble warrior king\nstraight away went by royal coach,\nout to Mount Pandava.\nGoing as far as the coach would go,\nhe got down, went up on foot,\nand on arrival sat down.\nSitting there,\nhe exchanged courteous greetings,\nthen said:\n\"You are young, youthful,\nin the first stage of youth,\nendowed with the stature & coloring\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 of a noble-warrior.\nYou would look glorious\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 in the vanguard of an army,\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 arrayed with an elephant squadron.\nI offer you wealth : enjoy it.\nI ask your birth : inform me.\"\n\"Straight ahead, your majesty,\nby the foothills of the Himalayas,\nis a country consummate\nin energy & wealth,\ninhabited by Kosalans:\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Solar by clan,\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Sakyans by birth.\nFrom that lineage I have gone forth,\nbut not in search of sensual pleasures.\nSeeing the danger in sensual pleasures\n-- and renunciation as rest -- \n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 I go to strive.\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 That's where my heart delights.\"","title":"Sn III.1: Pabbaja Sutta","type":"page"}
