Which four? There is the case where a monk says only what it well-spoken, not what is poorly spoken; only what is just, not what is unjust; only what is endearing, not what is unendearing; only what is true, not what is false. Speech endowed with these four characteristics is well-spoken, not poorly spoken -- faultless & not to be faulted by the wise.\"\nThat is what the Blessed One said. Having said this, the One Well-Gone, the Teacher, said further:\nThe calm say that what is well-spoken is best;\nsecond, that one should say\nwhat is just, not unjust;\nthird, what is endearing, not unendearing;\nfourth, what is true, not false.\n\"Let the inspiration come to you, Vangisa,\" the Blessed One said.\nThen Ven. Vangisa praised the Blessed One to his face with these attractive verses:\nSpeak only the speech\nthat neither torments self\nnor does harm to others.\nThat speech is truly well spoken.\nSpeak only endearing speech,\nspeech that is welcomed.\nSpeech when it brings no evil\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 to others\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 is pleasant.\nTruth, indeed, is deathless speech:\nThis is an ancient principle.\nThe goal and the Dhamma\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 -- so say the calm -- \nare firmly established on truth.\nThe speech the Awakened One speaks,\nfor attaining Unbinding,\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 rest,\nfor making an end\nto the mass of stress:\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 That is the speech unexcelled.","title":"Sn III.3: Subhasita Sutta","type":"page"}
