{"collection":"Buddhism","html_url":"https://unchartedknowledge.5gfusion.net/browse/bud/snp/snp4-3.htm","path":"bud/snp/snp4-3.htm","source_url":"https://sacred-texts.com/bud/snp/snp4-3.htm","text":"There are some who dispute\ncorrupted at heart,\nand those who dispute\ntheir hearts set on truth,\nbut a sage doesn't enter into\na dispute that's arisen,\nwhich is why he is\nnowhere constrained.\nNow, how would one\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 led on by desire,\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 entrenched in his likes,\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 forming his own conclusions,\novercome his own views?\nHe'd dispute in line\nwith the way that he knows.\nWhoever boasts to others, unasked,\nof his practices, precepts,\nis, say the wise,\nignoble by nature -- \n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 he who speaks of himself\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 of his own accord.\nBut a monk at peace,\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 fully unbound in himself,\nwho doesn't boast of his precepts\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 -- \"That's how I am\" -- \nhe, say the wise,\nis noble by nature -- \n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 he with no vanity\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 with regard to the world.\nOne whose doctrines aren't clean -- \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \nfabricated, formed, given preference\nwhen he sees it to his own reward -- \n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 relies on a peace\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 dependent\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 on what can be shaken.\nWhen one's convinced\nof what has been grasped among doctrines,\nentrenchments in views\naren't easily overcome.\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 That's why\na person takes up or rejects a doctrine -- \nin light of these very\nentrenchments.\nNow, one who is cleansed\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 has no view\nformed about states of becoming\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 or non-\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 anywhere in the world.\nHaving abandoned conceit & illusion,\nby what means would he go\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 anywhere in the world?\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 He isn't involved.\nFor one who's involved\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 gets into disputes\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 over doctrines,\nbut how -- through what means -- \nwould you argue\nwith one uninvolved?\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 He has nothing\ntaken up or rejected,\nhas sloughed off every view\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 right here -- every one.","title":"Sn IV.3: Dutthatthaka Sutta","type":"page"}
