{"collection":"Buddhism","html_url":"https://unchartedknowledge.5gfusion.net/browse/bud/snp/snp4-8.htm","path":"bud/snp/snp4-8.htm","source_url":"https://sacred-texts.com/bud/snp/snp4-8.htm","text":"\"Only here is there purity\"\n-- that's what they say --\n\"No other doctrines are pure\"\n-- so they say.\nInsisting that what they depend on is good,\nthey are deeply entrenched in their personal truths.\nSeeking debate, they plunge into an assembly,\nregarding one another as fools.\nDependent on the authority of others,\nthey speak in dispute.\nDesiring praise, they claim to be wise.\nEngaged in disputes in the midst of the assembly,\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 -- anxious, desiring praise -- \nthe one defeated is staggered.\nShaken with criticism, he seeks for an opening.\nHe whose doctine is [judged as] demolished,\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 defeated, by those judging the issue:\nHe laments, he grieves -- the inferior exponent.\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \"He beat me,\" he mourns.\nThese disputes have arisen among contemplatives.\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 In them are victory & defeat.\nSeeing this, one should abstain from disputes,\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 for they have no other goal\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 than the gaining of praise.\nHe who is praised there\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 for expounding his doctrine\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 in the midst of the assembly,\nlaughs on that account & grows haughty,\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 attaining his heart's desire.\nThat haughtiness will be his grounds for vexation,\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 for he'll speak in over-estimation & pride.\nSeeing this, one would abstain from disputes.\nNo purity is attained by them, say the wise.\nLike a strong man nourished on royal food,\none goes about, roaring, searching out an opponent.\nWherever the opponent is,\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 go there, strong man.\nAs before, there's no battle here.\nThose who dispute, taking hold of a view,\nsaying, \"This, and this only, is true,\"\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 those you can talk to.\nHere there is nothing -- \n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 no confrontation\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 at the birth of disputes.\nAmong those who live above confrontation\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 not pitting view against view,\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 whom would you gain as an opponent, Pasura,\namong those who are grasping no more?\nSo here you come,\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 conjecturing,\nyour mind conjuring\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 viewpoints.\nYou're paired off with a pure one,\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 and so cannot proceed.","title":"Sn IV.8: Pasura Sutta","type":"page"}
