{"collection":"Buddhism","html_url":"https://unchartedknowledge.5gfusion.net/browse/bud/thag/thag10.htm","path":"bud/thag/thag10.htm","source_url":"https://sacred-texts.com/bud/thag/thag10.htm","text":"Note: Unless otherwise indicated, these suttas were translated from the Pali by Thanissaro Bhikkhu.\nFull of the many clans of impurities,\nthe great manufacturer of excrement,\nlike a stagnant pool,\na great tumor,\ngreat wound,\nfull of blood & lymph,\nimmersed in a cesspool,\ntrickling liquids, the body\nis oozing foulness -- always.\nBound together with sixty sinews,\nplastered with a stucco of muscle,\nwrapped in a jacket of skin,\nthis foul body is of no worth at all.\nLinked together with a chain of bones,\nstitched together with tendon-threads,\nit produces its various postures,\nfrom being hitched up together.\nHeaded surely to death,\nin the presence of the King of Mortality,\nthe man who learns to discard it right here,\ngoes wherever he wants.\nCovered with ignorance,\nthe body's tied down with a four-fold tie,[1]\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 sunk in the floods,[2]\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 caught in the net of latencies,[3]\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 conjoined with five hindrances,[4]\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 given over to thought,\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 accompanied with the root of craving,\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 roofed with delusion's roofing.\nThat's how the body functions,\ncompelled by the compulsion of kamma,\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 but its attainment ends\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 in ruin.\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Its many becomings go\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 to ruin.\nThese who hold to this body as mine\n-- blind fools, people run-of-the-mill -- \nfill the horrific cemetery,\ntaking on further becoming.\nThose who stay uninvolved with this body\n-- as they would with a serpent\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 smeared with dung -- \ndisgorging the root of becoming,[5]\nfrom lack of effluent,\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 will be totally Unbound.\n2.
