{"collection":"Buddhism","html_url":"https://unchartedknowledge.5gfusion.net/browse/bud/thag/thag5.htm","path":"bud/thag/thag5.htm","source_url":"https://sacred-texts.com/bud/thag/thag5.htm","text":"Note: Unless otherwise indicated, these suttas were translated from the Pali by Thanissaro Bhikkhu.\nI, a monk,\ngone to the charnel ground,\nsaw a woman cast away,\ndiscarded\nthere in the cemetery.\nThough some were disgusted,\nseeing her -- dead, evil -- \n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 lust\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 appeared,\nas if I were blind\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 to the oozings.\nIn less time than it takes\nfor rice to cook,\nI got out of that place.\nMindful, alert, I\nsat down to one side.\nThen apt attention arose in me,\nthe drawbacks appeared,\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 disenchantment stood\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 at an even keel:\nWith that, my heart was released.\nSee the Dhamma's true rightness!\nThe three knowledges\nhave been attained;\nthe Awakened One's bidding,\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 done.\nStricken by sharp, wind-like pains,\nyou, monk, living in the forest grove\n-- harsh, with limited range for alms --\nwhat, what will you do?\nSuffusing my body\nwith abundant rapture & joy,\n& enduring what's harsh,\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 I'll stay in the grove.\nDeveloping the frames of reference,\nstrengths, faculties,\nthe factors of Awakening,\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 I'll stay in the grove.\nReflecting on those who are resolute,\ntheir persistence aroused,\nconstantly firm in their effort,\nunited in concord,\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 I'll stay in the grove.\nRecollecting the One Self-awakened,\nself-tamed & centered,\nuntiring both day & night,\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 I'll stay\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 in the grove.\nI shall fasten you, mind, like an elephant at a small gate. I shall not incite you to evil, you net of sensual pleasure, body-born.\nWhen fastened, you will not go, like an elephant not finding the gate open. Witch-mind, you will not wander again, and again, using force, delighting in evil.\nAs the strong hook-holder makes an untamed elephant, newly taken, turn against its will, so shall I make you turn.\nAs the excellent charioteer, skilled in the taming of excellent horses, tames a thoroughbred, so shall I, standing firm in the five powers, tame you.\nI shall bind you with mindfulness; with purified self shall cleanse [you]. Restrained by the yoke of energy you will not go far from here, mind.\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Intent on quibbling,\nthe dullard hears the Conqueror's teaching.\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 He's as far from the True Dhamma\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 as the ground is from the sky.\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Intent on quibbling,\nthe dullard hears the Conqueror's teaching.\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 He wanes from the True Dhamma,\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 like the moon in the dark half of the month.\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Intent on quibbling,\nthe dullard hears the Conqueror's teaching.\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 He withers away in the True Dhamma,\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 like a fish in next to no water.\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Intent on quibbling,\nthe dullard hears the Conqueror's teaching.\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 He doesn't grow in the True Dhamma,\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 like a rotten seed in a field.\nBut whoever hears the Conqueror's teaching\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 with guarded intent,\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 doing away with effluents -- all -- \n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 realizing the unshakable,\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 attaining the foremost peace,\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 is -- free from effluent -- \n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 totally unbound.","title":"Theragatha V","type":"page"}
