{"collection":"Buddhism","html_url":"https://unchartedknowledge.5gfusion.net/browse/bud/thig/thig6.htm","path":"bud/thig/thig6.htm","source_url":"https://sacred-texts.com/bud/thig/thig6.htm","text":"\"You don't know\nthe path\nof his coming or going,\nthat being who has come\nfrom where? --\nthe one you lament as 'my son.'\nBut when you know\nthe path\nof his coming or going,\nyou don't grieve after him,\nfor that is the nature\nof beings.\nUnasked,\nhe came from there.\nWithout permission,\nhe went from here -- \ncoming from \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 where?\nhaving stayed a few days.\nAnd coming one way from here,\nhe goes yet another\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 from there.\nDying in the human form,\nhe will go wandering on.\nAs he came, so he has gone -- \n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 so what is there\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 to lament?\"\nPulling out\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 -- completely out -- \nthe arrow so hard to see,\nembedded in my heart,\nhe expelled from me\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 -- overcome with grief -- \nthe grief\nover my son.\nToday -- with arrow removed,\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 without hunger, entirely\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Unbound -- \nto the Buddha, Dhamma, & Sangha I go,\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 for refuge to\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 the Sage.\nOverwhelmed with grief for my son -- \nnaked, demented,\nmy hair dishevelled\nmy mind deranged --\nI went about here & there,\nliving along the side of the road,\nin cemeteries & heaps of trash,\nfor three full years,\nafflicted with hunger & thirst.\nThen I saw\nthe One Well-gone,\ngone to the city of Mithila:\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 tamer of those untamed,\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Self-Awakened,\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 with nothing to fear\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 from anything, anywhere.\nRegaining my mind,\npaying him homage,\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 I sat myself down.\nHe, Gotama, from sympathy\ntaught me the Dhamma.\nHearing his Dhamma,\nI went forth into homelessness.\nApplying myself to the Teacher's words,\nI realized the state of auspicious bliss.\nAll griefs have been cut off,\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 abandoned,\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 brought to this end,\nfor I've comprehended\nthe grounds from which griefs\ncome into play.\nBorn in a high-ranking family\nwith much property, great wealth,\nconsummate in complexion & figure,\nI was the daughter of Majjha, the treasurer.\nSons of kings sought for me,\nsons of rich merchants\nlonged for me.\nOne of them sent my father a messenger,\nsaying, \"Give me Anopama.\nI will give in return\neight times her weight\nin jewels & gold.\"\nBut I, having seen\nthe One Self-awakened,\nunsurpassed, excelling the world,\npaid homage to his feet,\nsat down to one side.\nHe, Gotama, from sympathy,\ntaught me the Dhamma.\nAnd as I sat in that very seat,\nI attained the third fruit\n[of non-return.]\nThen I cut off my hair,\nand went forth into homelessness.\nToday is the seventh day\nsince I made craving\nwither away.","title":"Therigatha VI","type":"page"}
