{"collection":"Buddhism","html_url":"https://unchartedknowledge.5gfusion.net/browse/bud/tib/hrt.htm","path":"bud/tib/hrt.htm","source_url":"https://sacred-texts.com/bud/tib/hrt.htm","text":"HEART SUTRA\nThus have I heard at one time.\nThe Lord was dwelling at Rajagriha, on Vulture-peak mountain,\ntogether with a great host of monks and a great host of Bodhisattvas.\nAt that time the Lord was composed in the concentration on the\ncourse of dharmas called 'Profound Illumination.'\nAt that time also the noble Lord Avalokita, the Bodhisattva and\nMahasattva, in the practice of the profound Perfection of Wisdom,\nlooked down; he beheld but five skandhas and that in their own-being\nthey were empty.\nThen, through the inspiration of the Buddha, the Venerable\nSariputra said to the noble Lord Avalokita, the Bodhisattva and\nMahasattva: \"How should any child of good family train, who wishes to\nengage in the practice of the profound Perfection of Wisdom?\"\nAnd the noble Lord Avalokita, the Bodhisattva and Mahasattva, spoke\nto the venerable Sariputra as follows.\n\"Sariputra, any son or daughter of good family who wishes to engage\nin the practice of the profound Perfection of Wisdom should look upon\nit thus: he or she beholds but five skandhas and that in their own-\nbeing they are empty.\nForm is Emptiness, Emptiness is form.\nEmptiness does not differ from form, and form does not differ from\nEmptiness.\nLikewise feelings, recognitions, volitions and consciousnesses are\nempty.\nSo, Sariputra, all dharmas are Emptyness, without differentiating\nmarks; they are not produced or stopped, not defiled and not\nimmaculate, not deficient and not complete.\nTherefore, Sariputra, in Emptyness there is no form, no feeling, no\nrecognition, no volitions, no consciousness; no eye, no ear, no nose,\nno tongue, no body, no mind; no visible form, no sound, no smell, no\ntaste, no tangible, no mental object; no eye-element, and so forth, up\nto no mind-element and no mental-consciousness-element; no ignorance\nand no extinction of ignorance, and so forth, up to no aging and death\nand no extinction of aging and death; likewise there is no Suffering,\nOrigin, Cessation or Path, no wisdom-knowledge, no attainment and non-\nattainment.\nTherefore Sariputra, because there is no attainment, Bodhisattvas\nabide relying on the Perfection of Wisdom, without obscurations of\nthought, and so are unafraid.\nTranscending perverted views, they attain the end, Nirvana.\nAll Buddhas existing in the three times, relying on the Perfection\nof Wisdom, fully awaken to the highest, perfect Enlightenment.\nTherefore one should know that the mantra of the Perfection of\nWisdom is the mantra of great knowledge, the highest mantra, the\nunequalled mantra, the mantra that allays all suffering, the Truth,\nsince it has nothing wrong.\nThe mantra of the Perfection of Wisdom is proclaimed:\nTAD-YATHA; GATE GATE PARAGATE PARASAMGATE BODHI SVAHA!\nIn this way, Sariputra, should a Bodhisattva and Mahasattva train\nin the profound Perfection of Wisdom.\"\nThen the Lord rose from that concentration and commended the noble\nLord Avalokita, the Bodhisattva and Mahasattva, saying: \"Well said,\nwell said, O son of good family!\nSo it is, O son of good family, so it is.\nJust as you have taught should the profound Perfection of Wisdom be\npracticed, and the Tathagatas will rejoice.\nThus spake the Lord.\nThe Venerable Sariputra, the noble Lord Avalokita, the Bodhisattva\nand Mahasattva, and the whole world, that assembly with devas, human\nbeings, asuras and gandharvas, were delighted and applauded the Lord's\nspeech.","title":"Heart Sutra","type":"page"}
