Its peculiar style and evident antiquity may well lead to the belief that it is the work of our present author. It is, to the scattered hamlets of Chios and Mitylene, what Bishop Ken's Evening Hymn is to the villages of our own land; and its melody singularly plaintive and soothing.\nThe day is past and over;\n \u00a0\u00a0All thanks, O Lord, to Thee!\n I pray Thee, that offenceless\n \u00a0\u00a0The hours of dark may be.\nO Jesu! keep me in Thy sight,\n \u00a0\u00a0And save me through the coming night!\nThe joys of day are over:\n \u00a0\u00a0I lift my heart to Thee;\n And call on Thee, that sinless\n \u00a0\u00a0The hours of sin may be.\n O Jesu! make their darkness light,\n \u00a0\u00a0And save me through the coming night!\nThe toils of day are over:\n \u00a0\u00a0I raise the hymn to Thee;\n And ask that free from peril\n \u00a0\u00a0The hours of fear may be.\n O Jesu! keep me in Thy sight,\n \u00a0\u00a0And guard me through the coming night!\nLighten mine eyes, O Saviour,\n \u00a0\u00a0Or sleep in death shall I;\n And he, my wakeful tempter,\n \u00a0\u00a0Triumphantly shall cry: p. 61\n \"He could not make their darkness light,\n \u00a0Nor guard them through the hours of night!\"\nBe Thou my soul's preserver,\n \u00a0\u00a0O God! for Thou dost know\n How many are the perils\n \u00a0\u00a0Through which I have to go:\n Lover of men!
