Cosmas\nI shall, perhaps, render the following Canon more acceptable to most readers if, instead of translating the Odes in detail, I make a cento from the more remarkable Troparia.\nThey are principally from the first four Odes.\n\u03c7\u03bf\u03c1\u1f78\u03c2 \u1f38\u03c3\u03c1\u03b1\u03ae\u03bb.\nThe choirs of ransomed Israel,\n \u00a0\u00a0The Red Sea\u2019s passage o\u2019er,\n Uprais\u2019d the hymn of triumph\n \u00a0\u00a0Upon the further shore:\n And shouted, as the foeman\n \u00a0\u00a0Was whelm\u2019d beneath the sea,\u2014\n 'Sing we to Judah's Saviour,\n \u00a0\u00a0For glorified is He!'\nAmongst His Twelve Apostles\n \u00a0\u00a0Christ spake the Words of Life,\n And show\u2019d a realm of beauty\n \u00a0\u00a0Beyond a world of strife:\n 'When all My Father's glory\n \u00a0\u00a0Shall shine expressed in Me,\n Then praise Him, then exalt Him,\n \u00a0\u00a0For magnified is He!'\nUpon the Mount of Tabor\n \u00a0\u00a0The promise was made good;\n When, baring all the Godhead,\n \u00a0\u00a0In light itself He stood:\n And they, in awe beholding,\n \u00a0\u00a0The Apostolic Three,\n Sang out to God their Saviour,\n \u00a0\u00a0For magnified was He!\nIn days of old, on Sinai,\n \u00a0\u00a0The Lord of Sabaoth came, p. 152\n In majesty of terror,\n \u00a0\u00a0In thunder-cloud and flame:\n On Tabor, with the glory\n \u00a0\u00a0Of sunniest light for vest,\n The excellence of beauty\n \u00a0\u00a0In Jesus was express\u2019d.\nAll hours and days inclin\u2019d there,\n \u00a0\u00a0And did Thee worship meet,\n The sun himself adored Thee,\n \u00a0\u00a0And bow\u2019d him at Thy feet:\n White Moses and Elias,\n \u00a0\u00a0Upon the Holy Mount,\n The co-eternal glory\n \u00a0\u00a0Of Christ our God recount.\nO holy, wonderous Vision!\n \u00a0\u00a0But what, when this life past,\n The beauty of Mount Tabor\n \u00a0\u00a0Shall end in Heav\u2019n at last? p. 153\n But what, when all the glory\n \u00a0\u00a0Of uncreated light\n Shall be the promis\u2019d guerdon\n \u00a0\u00a0Of them that win the fight?\n[No. 5 in Mr. Sedding's book.]","title":"Hymns of the Eastern Church: S.
