{"collection":"Classics","html_url":"https://unchartedknowledge.5gfusion.net/browse/cla/hoo/index.htm","path":"cla/hoo/index.htm","source_url":"https://sacred-texts.com/cla/hoo/index.htm","text":"The Orphic Hymns are a set of pre-classical poetic compositions,\nattributed to the culture hero Orpheus, himself the subject\nof a renowned myth.\nIn reality, these poems were probably composed by several different poets.\nReminiscent of the Rig-Veda,\nthe Orphic Hymns\ncontain a rich set of clues about prehistoric European\nmythology.\nThis translation by Thomas Taylor, a British neo-Platonist classicist,\nis of additional interest for its introduction and extensive\nfootnotes, which discuss in great detail Taylors' philosophy.\nTaylor, who was considered a bit outside the pale by contemporary scholars,\nwas an influence on successive generations of occultists\nsuch as the Theosophists and the Golden Dawn,\nand in the 20th Century such writers as Manly P.
