Griffith, [1895]\n1The Bull supports the wide-spread earth and heaven, the Bull\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0supports the spacious air between them.\n \u00a0\u00a0The Bull supports the sky's six spacious regions: the universal\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0world hath he pervaded.\n 2The Bull is Indra o'er the beasts he watches. He, Sakra\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0measures out three several pathways.\n \u00a0\u00a0He, milking out the worlds, the past, the future, discharges all\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0the Gods' eternal duties.\n 3Being produced among mankind as Indra, the Caldron works\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0heated and brightly glowing.\n \u00a0\u00a0Let him not, with good sons, pass off in vapour who hath not\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0eaten of the Ox with knowledge.\n 4The Ox pours milk out in the world of virtue: in earliest time,\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0he, Pavam5na, swells it.\n \u00a0\u00a0Parjanya is the stream, Maruts his udder, sacrifice is the milk,\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0the meed his milking.\n 5That which not sacrifice nor sacrificer, not giver nor receiver\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0rules and governs,\n \u00a0\u00a0All-winning, all-supporting, all-effecting,\u2014which of all quadru-\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0peds, tell us! is the Caldron?\n 6May we, fame-seekers, reach the world of virtue by service of\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0the Gharma and through fervour,\n \u00a0\u00a0Whereby the Gods went up to heaven, the centre of life eternal,\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0having left the body.\n 7Praj\u0101pati, supreme and sovran ruler, Indra by form and by his\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0shoulder Agni,\n \u00a0\u00a0Came to Visv\u0101nara, came to all men's Bullock: he firmly forti-\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0fied and held securely. p. a117\n 8The middle of the Bullock's neck, there where the shoulder-bar\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0is placed,\n \u00a0\u00a0Extends as far to east of him as that is settled to the west.\n 9He whosoever knows the seven exhaustless pourings of the Ox,\n \u00a0\u00a0Wins himself offspring and the world: the great Seven Rishis\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0know this well.\n 10With feet subduing weariness, with legs extracting freshening\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0draughts,\n \u00a0\u00a0Through toil the plougher and the Ox approach the honeyed\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0beverage.\n 11Assigned are these twelve nights, they say, as holy to Praj\u0101pati:\n \u00a0\u00a0Whoever knows their proper prayer performs the service of the\n \u00a0\u00a0Ox.\n 12At evening he is milked, is milked at early morn, is milked at\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0noon.\n \u00a0\u00a0We know that streams of milk that flow from him are in-\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0exhaustible.","title":"Atharva Veda: Book 4: Hymn 11: A glorification of the sacrificial gharma or milk caldron","type":"page"}
