Griffith, [1895]\n1The sons of Vitahavya, the Srinjayas, waxed exceeding strong.\n \u00a0\u00a0They well-nigh touched the heavens, but they wronged Bhrigu\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0and were overthrown.\n 2When men pierced Brihats\u0101man through, the Br\u0101hman, son of\n \u00a0\u00a0Angiras,\n \u00a0\u00a0The ram with teeth in both his jaws, the sheep, devoured their\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0progeny.\n 3If men have spat upon, or shot their rheum upon a Br\u0101hman,\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0they.\n \u00a0\u00a0Sit in the middle of a stream running with blood, devouring\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0hair.\n 4While yet the Br\u0101hman's cow which men are dressing quivers in\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0her throe:\n \u00a0\u00a0She mars the kingdom's splendour: there no vigorous hero\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0springs to life.\n 5Terrible is her cutting-up: her bitter flesh is cast away,\n \u00a0\u00a0And it is counted sin among the Fathers if her milk is drunk.\n 6If any King who deems himself mighty would eat a Br\u0101hman\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0up,\n \u00a0\u00a0Rent and disrupted is that realm wherein a Br\u0101hman is oppres-\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0sed.\n 7She grows eight-footed, and four-eyed, four-eared, four-jawed,\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0two-faced, two-tongued,\n \u00a0\u00a0And shatters down the kingdom of the man who doth the\n \u00a0\u00a0Br\u0101hman wrong.\n 8As water swamps a leaky ship so ruin overflows that realm.\n \u00a0\u00a0Misfortune smites the realm wherein a Br\u0101hman suffers scath\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0and harm.\n 9The very trees repel the man, and drive him from their sheltering\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0shade,\n \u00a0\u00a0Whoever claims, O N\u0101rada, the treasure that a Br\u0101hman owns. p. a179\n 10That wealth, King Varuna hath said, is poison by the Gods\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0prepared.\n \u00a0\u00a0None hath kept watch to guard his realm who hath devoured a\n \u00a0\u00a0Br\u0101hman's cow.\n 11Those nine-and-ninety people whom Earth shook and cast away\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0from her,\n \u00a0\u00a0When they had wronged the Br\u0101hman race were ruined incon-\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0ceivably.\n 12Oppressor of the Br\u0101hmans! thus the Gods have spoken and\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0declared,\n \u00a0\u00a0The step-effacing wisp they bind upon the dead shall be thy\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0couch.\n 13Oppressor of the Br\u0101hmans! tears wept by the man who suffers\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0wrong,\n \u00a0\u00a0These are the share of water which the Gods have destined to be\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0thine.\n 14The share of water which the Gods have destined to be thine, is\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0that,\n \u00a0\u00a0Oppressor of the priest! wherewith men lave the corpse and wet\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0the beard.\n 15The rain of Mitra-Varuna falls not on him who wrongs the\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0priest.\n \u00a0\u00a0To him no counsel brings success: he wins, no friend to do his\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0will.","title":"Atharva Veda: Book 5: Hymn 19: The wickedness of robbing ...","type":"page"}
