I ask thee of these\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0twain, who was their milker.\n 2He who prepared a threefold home, and lying there made the\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0water bellow through his greatness,\n \u00a0\u00a0Calf of Vir\u0101j, giving each wish fulfilment, made bodies for him-\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0self far off, in secret.\n 3Which are the three, the mighty three, whereof the fourth divides\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0the voice,\n \u00a0\u00a0This may the Br\u0101hman know by prayer and fervour, whereto\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0belongs the one, whereto the other.\n 4Out of the Brihat as the sixth five Salmons have been fashioned\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0forth:\n \u00a0\u00a0From Brihat\u012b was Brihat formed: whence was the Brihat\u012b com-\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0posed?\n 5On measure Brihat\u012b is based, and measure on the measurer:\n \u00a0\u00a0From magic might came magic might, from magic might came\n \u00a0\u00a0M\u0101tali.\n 6Vaisv\u0101nara's image is the sky above us, so far as Agni forced\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0both spheres asunder. p. a347\n \u00a0\u00a0Thence from that region as the sixth come praise-songs, and\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0every sixth day hence again go upward.\n 7We, Kagyapa! six present Rishis, ask thee\u2014for thou hast prov-\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0ed things tried and meet for trial\n \u00a0\u00a0They call Vir\u0101j the Father of Devotion: tell her to us thy\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0friends in all her figures.\n 8She whom, advancing, sacrifices follow, and when she takes her\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0station stand beside her,\n \u00a0\u00a0By whose control and hest the spirit moveth, she is Vir\u0101j, in\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0highest heaven, O Rishis.\n 9Breathless, she moves by breath of living creatures, Svar\u0101j pre-\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0cedes, Vir\u0101j comes closely after.\n \u00a0\u00a0Some men behold her not, and some behold her, Vir\u0101j meet-\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0shaped, who thinks of all existence.\n 10Who hath perceived Vir\u0101j's duplication, perceived her seasons\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0and her rule and practice?\n \u00a0\u00a0Who knows her steps, how oft, how far extended, who knows\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0her home and number of her dawnings?\n 11She here who first of all sent forth her lustre moves onward\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0resting on these lower creatures.\n \u00a0\u00a0Exalted power and might are stored within her: the woman\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0hath prevailed, the new-come mother.\n 12Both Dawns on wings of song, with rich adornment, move on\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0together to their common dwelling.\n \u00a0\u00a0S\u016brya's two wives, unwasting, most prolific, knowing their way,\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0move, rich in light, together.\n 13The three have passed along the path of Order\u2014three warm\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0libations have regarded offspring\n \u00a0\u00a0One quickens progeny, one strengthens vigour, and one protects\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0the kingdom of the pious.\n 14She who was fourth was made by Agni, Soma, and Rishis as.\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0they formed both halves of worship,\n \u00a0\u00a0G\u0101yatr\u012b, Trishtup, Jagat\u012b, Anushtup, Brihadarki lightening the\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0sacrificer.\n 15Five milkings answer to the fivefold dawning, five seasons to\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0the cow who bears five titles.\n \u00a0\u00a0The five sky-regions made fifteen in number, one head have\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0these to one sole world directed.\n 16Six Elements arose, first-born of Order: the six-day time is\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0carried by six S\u0101mans. p. a348\n \u00a0\u00a0Six-yoked the plough is, as each trace is numbered: they call\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0both broad ones six; six, Earth and Heaven.\n 17They call the cold months six, and six the hot ones. Which, tell\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0us, of the seasons is redundant?\n \u00a0\u00a0Seven sages, eagles, have sat down together: seven metres\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0match the seven Consecrations.\n 18Seven are the Homas, seven the logs for burning, seven are the\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0streams of mead, and seven the seasons.\n \u00a0\u00a0Into the world have come seven streams of butter; those we\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0have heard of as the Seven Vultures.\n 19Seven metres, by four syllables increasing, each of the seven\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0founded upon another\n \u00a0\u00a0How are the hymns of praise on these supported, and how are\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0these imposed upon the praise-songs?\n 20How hath the G\u0101yatri filled out three triads? On the fifteen\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0how is the Trishtup moulded,\n \u00a0\u00a0Jagat\u012b fashioned on the three-and-thirty? How is Anushtup\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0formed? how Ekavinsa?\n 21Eight Elements sprang up, first born of Order: the Priests\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0divine are eight in number, Indra!\n \u00a0\u00a0Eight are the wombs of Aditi, eight her children; for the eighth\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0night is the libation destined.\n 22So planning bliss for you have I come hither to win your\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0friendship: kind am I, and gracious.\n \u00a0\u00a0Born from one source, propitious is your wisdom: knowing\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0full well to all of you it cometh.\n 23To Indra eight, to Yama six, seven to the Rishis, seven to\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0each:\n \u00a0\u00a0The number five accompanies waters and men and healing\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0herbs.\n 24The Heifer, all his own, poured forth for Indra control and\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0milk at her first time of milking;\n \u00a0\u00a0And he then satisfied the four divisions, the Gods and men and\n \u00a0\u00a0Asuras and Rishis.\n 25Who is the Cow? Who is the Single Rishi? What is the law,\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0what are the benedictions?\n \u00a0\u00a0What on the earth is the one only Spirit?
