Griffith, [1895]\n1Viraj at first was This. At birth all feared her; the thought, She\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0will become this All, struck terror.\n 2She rose, the G\u0101rhapatya fire she entered. He who knows this\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0becomes lord of a household, performer of domestic sacri-\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0fices.\n 3She mounted up, the Eastward fire she entered. He who knows\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0this becomes the Gods' beloved, and to his call they come\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0when she invokes them.\n 4She mounted up, the Southward fire she entered.\n \u00a0\u00a0He who knows this becomes a fit performer of sacrifice, meet\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0for honour, shelter-giver.\n 5She mounted up, she entered the Assembly. He who knows this\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0becomes polite and courtly, and people come as guests to his\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0assembly.\n 6She mounted up, she passed within the meeting. He who knows\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0this becomes fit for the meeting, and to his hall of meeting\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0come the people. p. a351\n 7She mounted up, she entered Consultation. Whoso knows this\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0is fit to be consulted, and to his consultation come the\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0people.\n 8She mounted up, and, into four divided, she took her station in\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0the air's mid-region.\n 9Of her the Gods and men said, This she knoweth. That we may\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0both have life let us invoke her.\n 10Thus did they cry to her:\n 11Come, Strength! come, Food! come, Charmer! come, Free-\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0giver!\n 12Her calf, her well-beloved calf, was Indra: G\u0101yatri was her\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0rope, the cloud her udder.\n 13Two teats she had, Rathantara and Brihat, two, Yajn\u0101yajniya\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0and V\u0101madevya.\n 14With the Rathantara the Gods milked from her the Plants, and\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0all the wide expanse with Brihat.\n 15They drew the Waters forth with V\u0101madevya, with Yajnayaj-\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0niya they milked out worship.\n 16For him who knoweth this, Rathantara poureth out Plants,\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0and Brihat yieldeth wide expansion.\n 17Waters from V\u0101mdevya come, from Yajn\u0101yajniya sacrifice.\n 18She rose, she came unto the tress: they killed her. A year went\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0by and she again existed.\n \u00a0\u00a0Hence in a year the wounds of trees heal over. He who knows\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0this sees his loathed rival wounded.\n 19She mounted up, she came unto the Fathers: they killed her:\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0in a month she re-existed.\n \u00a0\u00a0Hence men give monthly offerings to the Fathers: who knows\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0this, knows the path which they have trodden.\n 20She rose, she came unto the Gods: they killed her: but in a\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0fortnight she again was living.\n \u00a0\u00a0Fortnightly, hence, men serve the Gods with Vasat! Who\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0knows this knows the way which Gods pass over.\n 21She mounted up, she came to men: they killed her Presently\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0she regained her life and being.\n \u00a0\u00a0Hence on both days to men they bring and offer\u2014who knows\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0this\u2014near-seated in the dwelling.\n 22She rose, approached the Asuras: they called her: their cry was,\n \u00a0\u00a0Come, O M\u0101y\u0101, come thou hither. p. a352\n \u00a0\u00a0Her dear calf was Virochana Pr\u0101hr\u0101di: her milking vessel was a.\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0pan of iron.\n \u00a0\u00a0Dvim\u016brdh\u0101 \u0100rtvya milked her, yea, this M\u0101y\u0101, The Asuras\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0depend for life on M\u0101y\u0101. The Fathers called.\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0to her, O Food, come hither.\n \u00a0\u00a0King Yama was her calf, her pail was silvern. Antaka, Mrityu's.\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0son, milked her, this Svadh\u0101.\n \u00a0\u00a0This Food the Fathers make their lives' sustainer. He who\u2022\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0knows this becomes a meet supporter.\n 24She mounted up, she came to men. They called her, Come unto-\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0us, come hither thou Free-giver!\n \u00a0\u00a0Earth was her milking-pail, the calf beside her Manu Vaivasvata,\n \u00a0\u00a0Vivasv\u0101n's offspring.\n \u00a0\u00a0Prithi the son of Vena was her milker: he milked forth hus-\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0bandry and grain for sowing.\n \u00a0\u00a0These men depend for life on corn and tillage. He who knows\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0this becomes a meet supporter, successful in the culture of his_\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0corn-land.\n 25She rose, she came unto the Seven Rishis. They called her,.\n \u00a0\u00a0Come, Rich in Devotion! hither.\n \u00a0\u00a0King Soma was her calf. the Moon her milk-pail. Brihaspati.\n \u00a0\u00a0\u0100ngirasa, her milker,\n \u00a0\u00a0Drew from her udder Prayer and Holy Fervour. Fervour and\n \u00a0\u00a0Prayer maintain the Seven Rishis.\n \u00a0\u00a0He who knows this becomes a meet supporter, a priest illustri-\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0ous for his sacred knowledge.\n 26She rose, she came unto the Gods. They called her, crying, O\n \u00a0\u00a0Vigour, come to us, come hither!\n \u00a0\u00a0God Savitar milked her, he milked forth Vigour. The Gods\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0depend for life upon that Vigour. He who knows this becomes\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0a meet supporter.\n 27She rose approached the Apsarases and Gandharvas. They called\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0her, Come to us, O Fragrant-scented!\n \u00a0\u00a0The son of S\u016bryavarchas, Chitraratha, was her dear calf, her pail.\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0a lotus-petal.\n \u00a0\u00a0The son of S\u016bryavarchas, Vasuruchi, milked and drew from her\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0most delightful fragrance.\n \u00a0\u00a0That scent supports Apsarases and Gandharvas. He who knows p. a353\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0this becomes a meet supporter, and round him ever breathes\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0delicious odour.\n 28She mounted up, she came to Other People. They called her,\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0crying, Come, Concealment! hither.\n \u00a0\u00a0Her dear calf was Vaisravana Kubera, a vessel never tempered\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0was her milk-pail.\n \u00a0\u00a0Rajatan\u0101bhi, offspring of Kubera, milked her, and from her\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0udder drew concealment.\n \u00a0\u00a0By that concealment live the Other People. He who knows this\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0becomes a meet supporter, and makes all evil disappear and\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0vanish.\n 29She mounted up, she came unto the Serpents. The Serpents\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0called her, Venomous! come hither.\n \u00a0\u00a0Her calf was Takshaka, Vis\u0101la's offspring: a bottlegourd suppli-\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0ed a milking-vessel.\n \u00a0\u00a0Ir\u0101v\u0101n's offspring, Dhritar\u0101shtra milked her, and from her udder\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0drew forth only poison.\n \u00a0\u00a0That poison quickens and supports the Serpents: He who knows\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0this becomes a meet supporter.\n 30One would ward off, for him who hath this knowledge, if with a\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0bottle-gourd he sprinkled water.\n 31And did he not repel, if in his spirit he said, I drive thee back,\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0he would repel it.\n 32The poison that it drives away, that poison verily repels.\n 33The man who hath this knowledge pours its venom on his hated\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0foe.","title":"Atharva Veda: Book 8: Hymn 10: A glorification of the mystical abstraction Vir\u0101j","type":"page"}
