Griffith, [1895]\n1Here is my charm the Varana, slayer of rivals, strong in act.\n \u00a0\u00a0With this grasp thou thine enemies, crush those who fain would\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0injure thee.\n 2Break them in pieces; grasp them and destroy them. This Amu-\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0let shall go before and lead thee.\n \u00a0\u00a0With Varana the Gods, from morn to morning, have warded off\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0the Asuras' enchantment.\n 3This charm, this Varana healeth all diseases, bright with a thou-\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0sand eyes and golden glister.\n \u00a0\u00a0This charm shall conquer and cast down thy foemen. Be thou\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0the first to slay the men who hate thee.\n 4This will stay witchcraft wrought for thee, will guard thee from\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0the fear of man:\n \u00a0\u00a0From all distress and misery this Varana will shield thee well.\n 5Guard against ill of varied kind is Varana this heavenly Plant.\n \u00a0\u00a0The Gods have stayed and driven off Consumption which had\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0seized this man.\n 6If in thy sleep thou see an evil vision, oft as the beast repeats his\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0loathed approaches,\n \u00a0\u00a0This Amulet, this Varana will guard thee from sneeze, and from\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0the bird's ill-omened message.\n 7From Mischief, from Malignity, from incantation, from alarm,\n \u00a0\u00a0From death, from stronger foeman's stroke the Varana will\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0guard thee well.\n 8Each sinful act that we have done,\u2014my mother, father, and my\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0friends,\u2014 p. 10\n \u00a0\u00a0From all the guilt this heavenly Plant will be our guard and\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0sure defence.\n 9Affrighted by the Varana let my rivals near akin to me\n \u00a0\u00a0Pass to the region void of light: to deepest darkness let them\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0go.\n 10Safe are my cattle, safe am I, long-lived with all my men\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0around.\n \u00a0\u00a0This Varana, mine Amulet, shall guard me well on every side.\n 11This Varana is on my breast, the sovran, the celestial Plant.\n \u00a0\u00a0Let it afflict my foemen as Indra quelled fiends and Asuras.\n 12Through hundred autumn seasons, long to live, I wear this\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Varana.\n \u00a0\u00a0May it bestow on me great strength, cattle, and royalty and\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0power.\n 13As with its might the wind breaks down the trees, the sovrans\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0of the wood,\n \u00a0\u00a0So break and rend my rivals, born before me and born after.\n \u00a0\u00a0Let the Varana protect thee well.\n 14As Agni and the wind devour the trees, the sovrans of the wood,\n \u00a0\u00a0Even so devour my rivals, born before me and born after. Let\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0the Varana protect thee well.\n 15As, shattered by the tempest, trees lie withering ruined on the\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0ground.\n \u00a0\u00a0Thus over throw my rivals thou, so crush them down and ruin.\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0them, those born before and after.
