Here Aditi, afflicted, cooks a Brahmaudana,\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0yearning for children.\n \u00a0\u00a0Let the Seven Rishis, World-creators, rub thee into existence\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0here with gift of offspring.\n 2Raise, as I bid, the smoke, my strong companions, lovers of free-\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0dom from deceit and malice!\n \u00a0\u00a0Victor in fight heroic, here is Agni by whom the Gods subdued\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0the hostile demons.\n 3Thou, Agni, wart produced for mighty valour, to cook Brahmau-\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0dana, O J\u0101tavedas.\n \u00a0\u00a0Seven Rishis, makers of the world, begat thee, Grant to this\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0woman wealth with store of heroes.\n 4Burn up, O Agni, kindled with the fuel. Knowing the Gods who\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0merit worship, bring them.\n \u00a0\u00a0Cooking, for these, oblation, J\u0101tavedas! lift up this man to\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0heaven's most lofty summit.\n 5Your portion from of old is triply parted, portion of Gods, of\n \u00a0\u00a0Fathers, and of mortals.\n \u00a0\u00a0Know, all, your shares. I deal them out among you. The portion\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0of the Gods shall save this woman.\n 6Strong art thou, Agni, conquering, all-surpassing. Crush down\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0our foemen, ruin those who hate us.\n \u00a0\u00a0So let this measure, measured, being measured, make all our kin\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0thy tributary vassals.\n 7Increase with kinsmen and with all abundance: to mighty strength\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0and power lift up this woman.\n \u00a0\u00a0Erect, rise upward to the sky's high station, rise to the lofty\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0world which men call Svarga.\n 8May this great Earth receive the skin, this Goddess Prithiv\u012b,\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0showing us her love and favour. Arise and seize=\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0upon thy strength, O woman.\n \u00a0\u00a0To thee hath sacrifice come: take the pitcher, blest with a good\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0lord, children, children's children.\n 15Instructed by the Rishis, bring those waters, the share of strength\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0which was of old assigned you.\n \u00a0\u00a0Let this effectual sacrifice afford you protection, fortune, off-\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0spring, men, and cattle.\n 16Agni, on thee the sacrificial caldron hath mounted: shining,.\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0fiercely flaming, heat it.\n \u00a0\u00a0May hottest flames, divine, sprung from the Rishis, gathering,\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0with the Seasons, heat this portion.\n 17Purified, bright, and holy, let these Women, these lucid waters\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0glide into the caldron.\n \u00a0\u00a0Cattle and many children may they give us. May he who cooks.\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0the Odana go to heaven.\n 18Ye, Sacrificial Rice and Soma Fibres, cleansed and made pure by\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0prayer and molten butter. p. 43\n \u00a0\u00a0Enter the water: let the caldron take you. May he who dresses\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0this ascend to heaven.\n 19Expand thyself abroad in all thy greatness, with thousand Prish-\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0thas, in the world of virtue.\n \u00a0\u00a0Grandfathers, fathers, children, and descendants, fifteenth am I\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0to thee when I have dressed it.\n 20With thousand streams and Prishthas, undecaying, Brahmaudana\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0is celestial, God-reaching.\n \u00a0\u00a0Those I give up to thee with all their children. Force them to\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0tribute, but to me be gracious.\n 21Rise to the altar: bless this dame with offspring. Promote this\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0woman; drive away the demons.\n \u00a0\u00a0May we surpass in glory all our rivals. I cast beneath my feet the\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0men who hate us.\n 22Approach this woman here with store of cattle: together with\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0the deities come to meet her.\n \u00a0\u00a0Let not a curse or imprecation reach thee: in thine own seat\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0shine forth exempt from sickness.\n 23Fashioned at first by Right, set by the spirit, this altar of Brahmau-\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0dana was appointed.\n \u00a0\u00a0Place the pure boiler on it, woman! set thou therein the rice\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0mess of Celestial Beings.\n 24This second hand of Aditi, this ladle which the Seven Rishis,\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0world-creators, fashioned.\n \u00a0\u00a0May this scoop deftly pile upon the altar, therein, the members\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0of the rice-oblation.\n 25Let the dressed offering and divine Ones serve thee: creep from.\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0the fire again, own these as masters.\n \u00a0\u00a0Made pure with Soma rest within the Br\u0101hmans: let not thine\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0eaters, Rishis' sons, be injured.\n 26Give understanding unto these, King Soma! all the good Br\u0101h\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0mans who attend and serve thee.\n \u00a0\u00a0Oft, in Brahmaudana, and well I call on: Rishis, their sons, and\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0those who sprang from Fervour.\n 27Here I set singly in the hands of Br\u0101hmans these cleansed and.\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0purifie d and holy Women,\n \u00a0\u00a0May Indra, Marut girt, grant me the blessing which as I sprinkle\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0you, my heart desireth.\n 28Here is my gold, a light immortal: ripened grain from the field\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0this Cow of Plenty give me! p. 44\n \u00a0\u00a0This wealth I place among the Br\u0101hmans, making a path that\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0leads to heaven among the Fathers.\n 29Lay thou the chaff in Agni J\u0101tavedas: remove the husks and\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0drive them to a distance.\n \u00a0\u00a0That, we have heard, that is the House-Lord's portion: we know\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0the share allotted to Destruction.\n 30Mark him who toils and cooks and pours oblation: make this\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0man climb the path that leads to heaven,\n \u00a0\u00a0That he may mount and reach life that is highest, ascending to\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0the loftiest vault above us.\n 31Adhvaryu, cleanse that face of the Supporter. Make room, well\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0knowing, for the molten butter.\n \u00a0\u00a0Purify duly all the limbs with fatness. I make a path to heaven\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0amid the Fathers.\n 32Supporter, send to those men fiends and battle, to all non-Brah-\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0mans who attend and serve thee.\n \u00a0\u00a0Famous and foremost, with their great possessions, let not these\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0here, the Rishis sons, be injured.\n 33I set thee, Odana, with Rishis' children: naught here belongs to\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0men not sprung from Rishis.\n \u00a0\u00a0Let Agni my protector, all the Maruts, the Visve Devas guard\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0the cooked oblation.\n 34May we adore thee, Sacrifice that yieldeth an everlasting son,\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0cow, home of treasures,\n \u00a0\u00a0Together with increasing store of riches, long life and immor-\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0tality of children.\n 35Thou art a Bull that mounts to heaven: to Rishis and their off-\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0spring go.\n \u00a0\u00a0Rest in the world of pious men: there is the place prepared for\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0us.\n 36Level the ways: go thitherward, O Agni.
