Griffith, [1895]\n1Stirring both worlds the Brahmach\u0101ri moveth: in him the\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0deities are all one-minded.\n \u00a0\u00a0He hath established firmly earth and heaven: he satisfies his\n \u00a0\u00a0Master with his Fervour.\n 2After the Brahmach\u0101r\u012b go the Fathers, the heavenly hosts, all\n \u00a0\u00a0Gods in separate order.\n \u00a0\u00a0After him too have the Gandharvas followed, thirty and three,\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0three hundred, and six thousand. He satisfies all Gods with\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0his devotion.\n 3The Master, welcoming his new disciple, into his bowels takes\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0the Brahmach\u0101ri.\n \u00a0\u00a0Three nights he holds and bears him in this belly. When he is\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0born, the Gods convene to see him.\n 4This log is earth, the second log is heaven: he fills the air's mid\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0region with the fuel.\n \u00a0\u00a0With fuel, with his zone the Brahmach\u0101ri contents the worlds,\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0with labour and with Fervour.\n 5The Brahmach\u0101ri, earlier born than Brahma, sprang up through\n \u00a0\u00a0Fervour, robed in hot libation.\n \u00a0\u00a0From him sprang heavenly lore, the highest Brahma, and all the\n \u00a0\u00a0Gods, with life that lasts for ever. p. 56\n 6Lighted by fuel goes the Brahmach\u0101ri, clad in black-buck skin,\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0consecrate, long-bearded.\n \u00a0\u00a0Swiftly he goes from east to northern ocean, grasping the worlds,\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0oft bringing them anear him.\n 7The Brahmach\u0101ri, fathering Prayer, world, Waters, Vir\u0101j, Praj\u0101-\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0pati, and Parameshthin,\n \u00a0\u00a0Lay as a germ within the Immortal's bosom, then became Indra\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0and destroyed the demons.\n 8The Master fashioned both these cloudy regions, profound and\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0spacious pair, the earth and heaven.\n \u00a0\u00a0The Brahmach\u0101ri guards them with his Fervour. In him the\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0deities are all one-minded.\n 9The Brahmach\u0101ri first of all brought hither this ample earth as\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0alms, and heaven above it.\n \u00a0\u00a0He makes these twain two fuel-logs, and worships, On these sup-\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0ported rest all living creatures.\n 10Both treasuries of sacred lore lie hidden, one hitherward, beyond\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0heaven's ridge the other.\n \u00a0\u00a0The Brahmach\u0101r\u012b with his Fervour guards them. He makes this\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0all his own as knowing Brahma.\n 11Hitherward one, hence from the earth the other, two Agnis meet\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0between these cloudy regions.\n \u00a0\u00a0Close to these two firm rays of light are clinging. The Brahma-\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0ch\u0101ri enters them through Fervour.\n 12Thundering, shouting, ruddy-hued, and pallid, he bears along the\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0earth great manly vigour.\n \u00a0\u00a0Down on the ridge of earth the Brahmach\u0101ri pours seed, and\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0this gives life to heaven's four regions.\n 13The Brahmach\u0101ri stores with fuel Waters, and Fire, and Sun, and\n \u00a0\u00a0Moon, and M\u0101tarisvan.\n \u00a0\u00a0The Water's lights move separate in the rain-cloud, Man, rain,\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0and water are their molten butter.\n 14The Master is Death, Varuna, Soma, the plants of earth, and\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0milk.\n \u00a0\u00a0The thunder-clouds were men of war. By these this heavenly\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0light was brought.\n 15Varuna, made a Master, takes at home the butter to himself.\n \u00a0\u00a0Whatever with Praj\u0101pati he sought, the Brahmach\u0101ri gave like\n \u00a0\u00a0Mitra from his loftiest soul. p. 57\n 16The pupil is the Master, yea, the pupil is Praj\u0101pati.\n \u00a0\u00a0Praj\u0101pati shines bright; the bright Vir\u0101j grew potent Indra's self.\n 17By Fervour and by self-restraint the King protects the realm he\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0rules.\n \u00a0\u00a0By self-restraint the Master seeks a Brahmachari to instruct.\n 18By self-restraint a maiden finds a youth to be her wedded lord.\n \u00a0\u00a0By self-restraint the ox and horse seek to win fodder for them-\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0selves.\n 19By Fervour and by self-restraint the Gods draye Death away\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0from them,\n \u00a0\u00a0And Indra brought by self-restraint heaven's lustre to the deities.\n 20The plants, what is and what shall be, day, night, the tall tree of\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0the wood,\n \u00a0\u00a0The year with seasons of the year, all from the Brahmach\u0101ri\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0sprang.\n 21All creatures of the earth and heaven, tame animals and sylvan\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0beasts,\n \u00a0\u00a0Winged and wingless creatures, from the Brahmach\u0101ri sprang\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0to life,\n 22All children of Praj\u0101pati have breath distinctly in themselves.\n \u00a0\u00a0The Brahma that is stored within the Brahmach\u0101ri guards them\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0all.\n 23Piled up on high, but never yet ascended, that power of deities\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0is brightly shining.\n \u00a0\u00a0From that sprang heavenly lore, the loftiest Brahma, and all the\n \u00a0\u00a0Gods with, life that lasts for ever.\n 24The Brahmach\u0101ri wields the radiant Brahma wherein all Gods\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0are woven close together;\n \u00a0\u00a0Creating breath, inhaling and exhaling, voice, mind, and heart,\n \u00a0\u00a0Brahma and holy wisdom.\n 25Bestow on us the power of sight and hearing, glory and food and\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0seed and blood and belly.\n 26These, standing on the flood, the Brahmach\u0101ri formed practising\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0in sea his hot devotion.\n \u00a0\u00a0When he hath bathed, brown, yellow-hued, he shines exceedingly\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0on earth.","title":"Atharva Veda: Book 11: Hymn 5: A glorification of the Brahmachgri or religious student","type":"page"}
