Griffith, [1895]\n1Rise, Mighty One, who liest in the waters, and enter this thy\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0fair and glorious kingdom.\n \u00a0\u00a0Let Rohita who made this All uphold thee carefully nurtured\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0for supreme dominion.\n 2The strength that was in waters hath ascended. Mount o'er the\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0tribes which thou hast generated.\n \u00a0\u00a0Creating Soma, waters, plants and cattle, bring hitherward both\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0quadrupeds and bipeds.\n 3Ye Maruts, strong and mighty, sons of Prisni, with Indra for\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0ally crush down our foemen.\n \u00a0\u00a0Let Rohita, ye bounteous givers, hear you, thrice-seven Maruts\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0who delight in sweetness!\n 4Up to the lap of births, to lofty places, hath Rohita, the germ\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0of Dames, ascended.\n \u00a0\u00a0Conjoined with these he found the six realms: seeing his way\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0in front here he received the kingship.\n 5For thee hath Rohita obtained dominion, scattered thine ene-\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0mies, become thy safeguard.\n \u00a0\u00a0So by the potent Sakvaris let Heaven and Earth be milked to-\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0yield thee all thy wishes.\n 6Rohita gave the Earth and Heavens their being. There Para-\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0meshthin held the cord extended.\n \u00a0\u00a0Thereon reposeth Aja Ekap\u0101da. He with his might hath stab-\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0lished Earth and Heaven.\n 7Rohita firmly stablished Earth and Heaven: by him was ether\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0fixt by him the welkin.\n \u00a0\u00a0He measured out mid air and all the regions: by him the Gods\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0found life that lasts for ever.\n 8Arranging shoots, springs, Rohita considered this Universe in\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0all its forms and phases.\n \u00a0\u00a0May he, gone up to heaven with mighty glory, anoint thy sov-\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0ranty with milk and fatness. p. 108\n 9Thy risings up, thy mountings and ascensions wherewith thou\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0fillest heaven and air's mid-region\u2014\n \u00a0\u00a0By prayer for these, by milk of these, increasing, in Rohita's\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0kingdom watch, among his people.\n 10The tribes thy heat produced have followed hither the Calf and\n \u00a0\u00a0G\u0101yatri, the strain that lauds him.\n \u00a0\u00a0With friendly heart let them approach to serve thee, and the\n \u00a0\u00a0Calf Rohita come with his mother.\n 11Erected, Rohita hath reached the welkin, wise, young, creating\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0every form and figure.\n \u00a0\u00a0Agni, refulgent with his heightened lustre, in the third realm\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0hath brought us joy and gladness.\n 12Thousand-horned Bull, may J\u0101tavedas, worshipped with butter,\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0balmed with Soma, rich in heroes,\n \u00a0\u00a0Besought, ne'er quit me; may I ne'er forsake thee. Give me\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0abundant men and herds of cattle.\n 13Rohita is the sire and mouth of worship: to him with voice, ear,\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0heart I pay oblation.\n \u00a0\u00a0To Rohita come Gods with joyful spirit. May he by risings raise\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0me till I join him.\n 14Rohita ordered sacrifice for Visvakarman: thence have I obta-\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0ined this strength and energy.\n \u00a0\u00a0May I proclaim thee as my kin over the greatness of the world.\n 15On thee have mounted Brihat\u012b and Pankti. and Kakup with great\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0splendour, J\u0101tavedas!\n \u00a0\u00a0The cry of Vashat with the voice uplifted and Rohita with seed\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0on thee have mounted.\n 16He goes into the womb of earth, he robes himself in heaven and\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0air.\n \u00a0\u00a0He on the Bright One's station hath reached heavenly light and\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0all the worlds.\n 17To us, V\u0101chaspati, may Earth be pleasant, pleasant our dwelling,\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0pleasant be our couches.\n \u00a0\u00a0Even here may Pr\u0101na be our friend: may Agni, O Parameshthin\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0give thee life and splendour.\n 18And those, V\u0101chaspati, our own five seasons, sacred to Visva-\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0karman their creator.\n \u00a0\u00a0Even here our friend be Pr\u0101na: Parameshthin, may Rohita\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0vouchsafe the life and splendour. p. 109\n 19Breed, O V\u0101chaspati, joy and understanding, kine i n our stall\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0and children in our consorts.\n \u00a0\u00a0Even here may Pr\u0101na be our friend: may Agni, O Parameshthin,\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0give thee life and splendour.\n 20With splendour let God Savitar, and Agni, with splendour\n \u00a0\u00a0Mitra, Varuna invest thee.\n \u00a0\u00a0Treading down all Malignities, come hither. Pleasant and'\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0glorious hast thou made this kingdom.\n 21Rohita, car-borne by a speckled leader, thou, pouring water,.\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0goest on in triumph.\n 22Golden, refulgent, lofty is the Lady, Rohin\u012b, Rohita's devoted\n \u00a0\u00a0Consort.\n \u00a0\u00a0Through her may we win various spoil and booty, through her\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0be conquerors in every battle.\n 23Rohita's seat is Rohin\u012b before us: that is the path the speckled\n \u00a0\u00a0Mare pursueth.\n \u00a0\u00a0Kasyapas and Gandharvas lead her upward, and heavenly sages\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0ever watch and guard her,\n 24S\u016brya's bay steeds refulgent and immortal draw the light-rolling.\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0chariot on for ever.\n \u00a0\u00a0Drinker of fatness, Rohita, resplendent, hath entered into\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0various-coloured heaven,\n 25Rohita, Bull whose horns are sharply pointed, superior of Agni\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0and of S\u016brya,\n \u00a0\u00a0He who supports the sundered earth and heaven,\u2014from him the\n \u00a0\u00a0Gods effect their own creations.\n 26Rohita rose to heaven from mighty ocean, Rohita rose and\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0clomb all steeps and rises.\n 27Prepare the Milky One who teems with fatness: she is the Gods'\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0never-reluctant milch-cow.\n \u00a0\u00a0Indra drink Soma: ours be peace and safety. Let Agni lead the\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0laud, and chase our foemen.\n 28Both kindling and inflamed, adored with butter and enhanced\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0thereby.\n \u00a0\u00a0May conquering Agni, conqueror of all, destroy mine enemies.\n 29Let him smite down in death and burn the foeman who\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0attacketh me.\n \u00a0\u00a0Our adversaries we consume through Agni the Carnivorous.\n 30Beat them down, Indra, with thy bolt, beat them down, mighty\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0with thine arm. p. 110\n \u00a0\u00a0I through the energy and force of Agni have secured my foes.\n 31Cast down our foes beneath our feet, O Agni. Brihaspati,\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0oppress our rebel kinsman.\n \u00a0\u00a0Low let them fall, O Indra-Agni. Mitra-Varuna, powerless to\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0show their anger.\n 32Ascending up on high, O God. O S\u016brya, drive my foes away.\n \u00a0\u00a0Yea, beat them backward with the stone: to deepest darkness\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0let them go.\n 33Calf of Vir\u0101j, the Bull of prayers and worship, whitebacked, he\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0hath gone up to air's mid-region.\n \u00a0\u00a0Singing, they hymn the Calf, with gifts of butter: him who is\n \u00a0\u00a0Brahma they exalt with Brahma.\n 34Rise up to earth, rise up to heaven above it; rise up to opulence,\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0rise up to kingship.\n \u00a0\u00a0Rise up to offspring, rise to life immortal; rise, and with Rohita\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0unite thy body.\n 35With all the Gods who circle round the Sun, upholding royal\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0sway,\n \u00a0\u00a0With all of these may Rohita accordant, give sovranty to thee\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0with friendly spirit.\n 36Cleansed by prayer, sacrifices bear thee upward: bay coursers,\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0ever travelling, convey thee. Thy light shines over sea and\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0billowy ocean.\n 37Rohita, conqueror of cows and riches and gathered spoil, is\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0heaven's and earth's upholder.\n \u00a0\u00a0Over earth's greatness would I tell my kinship with thee who\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0hast a thousand births and seven.\n 38A glorious sight to beasts and men, thou goest glorious to the\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0regions and mid-regions.\n \u00a0\u00a0On earth's, on Aditi's bosom, bright with glory. Fain would I\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0equal Savitar in beauty.\n 39Thou, yonder, knowest all things here, when here thou knowest\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0what is there.\n \u00a0\u00a0From here men see the sphere of light, S\u016brya profoundly wise in\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0heaven.\n 40A God, thou injurest the Gods: thou movest in the ocean's\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0depth.\n \u00a0\u00a0Men kindle common Agni: him only the higher sages know.\n 41Beneath the upper realm, above this lower, bearing her Calf at\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0foot, the Cow hath risen p. 111\n \u00a0\u00a0Whitherward, to what place hath she departed? Where doth she\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0calve? Not in this herd of cattle.\n 42She hath become one-footed or two-footed, four-footed, or\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0eight-footed or nine-footed,\n \u00a0\u00a0This universe's thousand-syllabled Pankti Oceans flow forth\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0from her in all directions.\n 43Rising to heaven, immortal, hear my calling. Cleansed by\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0prayer, sacrifices bear thee upward. Bay coursers, ever on the\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0road, convey thee.\n 44This, O Immortal One, I know of thee, thy progress to the sky\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0thy dwelling-place in loftiest heaven.\n 45Beyond the sky, beyond the Earth looks S\u016brya, and beyond the\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0floods.\n \u00a0\u00a0The single eye of all that is; to mighty heaven hath he arisen.\n 46The earth was made his altar, and the wide expanses were the\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0fence.\n \u00a0\u00a0There Rohita established both these Agnis, fervent heat and\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0cold.\n 47He stablished heat and cold, he made the mountains sacrificial\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0posts.\n \u00a0\u00a0Then both the Agnis, Rohita's who found celestial light, with\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0rain for molten butter, sacrificed.\n 48Rohita's Agni-his who found heaven's light-is kindled with the\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0prayer.\n \u00a0\u00a0From him the heat, from him the cold, from him the sacrifice\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0was born.\n 49Both Agins-Rohita's who found the light of heaven\u2014made\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0strong by prayer,\n \u00a0\u00a0Waxing by prayer, adored with prayer, by prayer enkindled,\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0sacrificed.\n 50One is deposited in Truth, one kindled in the waters: both\n \u00a0\u00a0Agnis of Rohita who found the light are set aflame with prayer.\n 51That decked by Wind, and that prepared by Indra Br\u0101hman-\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0aspati,\n \u00a0\u00a0Agnis of Rohita who found light, prayer-enkindled, sacrificed.\n 52Rohita made the earth to be his altar, heaven his Dakshin\u0101.\n \u00a0\u00a0Then heat he took for Agni, and with rain for molten butter he\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0created every living thing.\n 53The earth became an altar, heat was Agni, and the butter rain. p. 112\n \u00a0\u00a0There Agni made, by song and hymn, these mountains rise and\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0stand erect.\n 54Then, having made the hills stand up, Rohita spake to Earth,\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0and said:\n \u00a0\u00a0In thee let every thing be born, what is and what is yet to be.\n 55This sacrifice, the first of all, the past, the present, had its birth.\n \u00a0\u00a0From that arose this universe, yea, all this world of brightness,\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0brought by Rohita the heavenly Sage.\n 56If thou should kick a cow, or by indecent act offend the Sun,\n \u00a0\u00a0Thy root I sever; nevermore mayst thou cast shadow on the\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0ground.\n 57Thou who, between the fire and me, passest across the line of\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0shade.\n \u00a0\u00a0Thy root I sever: nevermore mayst thou cast shadow on the\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0ground.\n 58Whoe'er he be who, S\u016brya, God! comes between thee and me\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0to-day,\n \u00a0\u00a0On him we wipe away ill-dream, and troubles, and impurity.\n 59Let us not, Indra, leave the path, the Soma-presser's sacrifice.\n \u00a0\u00a0Let not malignities dwell with us.\n 60May we obtain, completely wrought, the thread spun out tc\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0reach the Gods,\n \u00a0\u00a0That perfecteth our sacrifice.","title":"Atharva Veda: Book 13: Hymn 1: The glorification of Rohita, a form of Fire and of the Sun","type":"page"}
