Griffith, [1895]\n1Radiant, refulgent in the sky are reared the banners of his light,\n \u00a0\u00a0\u0100ditya's, who beholdeth man, mighty in act and bountiful.\n 2Let us laud him, the whole world's Herdsman, S\u016brya, who with\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0his rays illumines all the regions,\n \u00a0\u00a0Mark of the quarters, brightening them with lustre, swift,\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0mighty-pinioned, flying in the ocean.\n 3From west to east thou speedest freely, making by magic day\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0and night of diverse colours.\n \u00a0\u00a0This is \u0100ditya, thy transcendent glory, that thou alone art born\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0through all creation.\n 4Victorious, inspired, and brightly shining, whom seven strong\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0tawny-coloured coursers carry,\n \u00a0\u00a0Whom Atri lifted from the flood to heaven, thus men behold\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0thee as thy course thou runnest.\n 5Let them not snare thee speeding on thy journey: pass safely,\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0swiftly places hard to traverse,\n \u00a0\u00a0While measuring out the day and night thou movest\u2014O S\u016brya,\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0even Heaven and Earth the Goddess.\n 6Hail to thy rapid car whereon, O S\u016brya, thou circlest in a\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0moment both the limits,\n \u00a0\u00a0Whirled by thy bay steeds, best of all at drawing, thy hundred\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0horses or seven goodly coursers!\n 7Mount thy strong car, O S\u016brya, lightly rolling, drawn by good\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0steeds, propitious, brightly gleaming,\n \u00a0\u00a0Whirled by thy bays, most excellent at drawing, thy hundred\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0horses or seven goodly coursers.\n 8S\u016brya hath harnessed to his car to draw him seven stately bay\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0steeds gay with wolden housings.\n \u00a0\u00a0The Bright One started from the distant region: dispelling\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0gloom the God hath climbed the heavens.\n 9With lofty banner hath the God gone upward, and introduced\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0the light, expelling darkness.\n \u00a0\u00a0He hath looked round on all the worlds, the Hero, the son of\n \u00a0\u00a0Aditi, Celestial Eagle. p. 116\n 10Rising, thou spreadest out thy rays, thou nourishest all shapes\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0and forms.\n \u00a0\u00a0Thou with thy power illumest both the oceans, encompassing\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0all spheres with thy refulgence.\n 11Moving by magic power to east and westward, these two young\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0creatures, sporting, circle ocean.\n \u00a0\u00a0One of the pair beholds all living creatures: with wheels of gold\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0the bay steeds bear the other.\n 12Atri established thee in heaven. O Surya, to create the month.\n \u00a0\u00a0So on thou goest, firmly held, heating, beholding all that is.\n 13As the Calf both his parents so thou joinest both the distant\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0bounds,\n \u00a0\u00a0Surely the Gods up yonder knew this sacred mystery long ago.\n 14S\u016brya is eager to obtain all wealth that lies along the sea,\n \u00a0\u00a0Great is the course spread out for him, his eastward and his\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0westward path.\n 15He finishes his race with speed and never turns his thought\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0aside,\n \u00a0\u00a0Thereby he keeps not from the Gods enjoyment of the Drink of\n \u00a0\u00a0 Life.\n 16His heralds bear him up aloft, the God who knoweth all that\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0live,\n \u00a0\u00a0S\u016brya, that all may look on him.\n 17The Constellations pass away, like thieves, departing in the\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0night.\n \u00a0\u00a0Before the all-beholding Sun.\n 18His herald rays are seen afar refulgent o'er the world of men,\n \u00a0\u00a0Like flames of fire that burn and blaze.\n 19Swift and all-beautiful art thou, O S\u016brya, maker of the light,\n \u00a0\u00a0Illuming all the radiant realm.\n 20Thou goest to the hosts of Gods, thou comest hither to mankind,\n \u00a0\u00a0Hither, all light to behold.\n 21With that same eye of thine wherewith thou seest, brilliant\n \u00a0\u00a0Varuna.\n the daughters of the\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0car, with these,\n \u00a0\u00a0His own dear team, he travelleth.\n 25Devout, aflame with fervent heat, Rohita hath gone up to\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0heaven.\n \u00a0\u00a0He is re-born, returning to his birthplace, and hath become the\n \u00a0\u00a0Gods' imperial ruler.\n 26Dear unto all men, facing all directions, with hands and palms\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0on every side extended,\n \u00a0\u00a0He, the sole God, engendering earth and heaven, beareth them\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0with his wings and arms together.\n 27The single-footed hath outstepped the biped, the biped overtakes\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0the triple-footed.\n \u00a0\u00a0The biped hath outstridden the six-footed: these sit around the\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0single-footed's body.\n 28When he, unwearied, fain to go, hath mounted his bays, he\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0makes two colours, brightly shining.\n \u00a0\u00a0Rising with banners, conquering the regions, thou sendest light\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0through all the floods, \u0100ditya.\n 29Verily, S\u016brya, thou art great: truly, \u0100ditya, thou art great.\n \u00a0\u00a0Great is thy grandeur, Mighty One: thou, O \u0100ditya, thou art\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0great.\n 30In heaven, O Bird, and in mid-air thou shinest: thou shinest on\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0the earth and in the waters.\n \u00a0\u00a0Thou hast pervaded both the seas with splendour: a God art\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0thou, O God, light-winner, mighty.\n 31Soaring in mid-course hither from the distance, fleet and ins-\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0pired, the Bird that flies above us,\n \u00a0\u00a0With might advancing Vishnu manifested, he conquers all that\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0moves with radiant banner:\n 32Brilliant, observant, mighty Lord, an Eagle illuming both the\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0spheres and air between them.\n \u00a0\u00a0Day and the Night, clad in the robes of S\u016brya, spread forth more\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0widely all his hero powers.\n 33Flaming and radiant, strengthening his body, bestowing floods\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0that promptly come to meet us,\n \u00a0\u00a0He, luminous, winged, mighty, strength-bestower, hath mounted\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0all the regions as he forms them. p. 118\n 34Bright presence of the Gods, the luminous herald S\u016brya hath\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0mounted the celestial regions.\n \u00a0\u00a0Day's maker, he hath shone away the darkness, and radiant,\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0passed o'er places hard to traverse.\n 35He hath gone up on high, the Gods' bright presence, the eye of\n \u00a0\u00a0Mitra, Varuna and Agni.\n \u00a0\u00a0The soul of all that moveth not or moveth, S\u016brya hath filled the\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0earth and air and heaven,\n 36High in the midst of heaven may we behold thee whom men call\n \u00a0\u00a0Savitar, the bright red Eagle,\n \u00a0\u00a0Soaring and speeding on thy way, refulgent, unwasting light\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0which Atri erst discovered.\n 37Him, Son of Aditi, an Eagle hasting along heaven's height, I\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0supplicate in terror,\n \u00a0\u00a0As such prolong our lengthened life, O S\u016brya: may we, unha-\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0rmed, enjoy thy gracious favour.\n 38This gold-hued Hansa's wings, soaring to heaven, spread o'er a\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0thousand days' continued journey\n \u00a0\u00a0Supporting all the Gods upon his bosom, he goes his way behold-\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0ing every creature.\n 39Rohita, in primeval days Praj\u0101pati, was, after, Time, Mouth of\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0all sacrifices, he, Rohita, brought celestial light.\n 40He, Rohita, became the world: Rohita gave the heaven its heat.\n \u00a0\u00a0Rohita with his beams of light travelled along the earth and sea.\n 41To all the regions Rohita came, the imperial Lord of heaven.\n \u00a0\u00a0He watches over ocean, heaven, and earth and all existing things.\n 42Mounting the lofty ones, he, bright, unwearied, splendidly\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0shining, makes two separate colours,\n \u00a0\u00a0While through all worlds that are he sends his lustre, radiant,\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0observant, mighty, wind-approacher.\n 43One form comes on, the other is reverted: to day and night the\n \u00a0\u00a0Strong One shapes and fits him.\n \u00a0\u00a0With humble prayer for aid we call on S\u016brya, who knows the\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0way, whose home is in the region.\n 44The suppliant's way, filling the earth, the Mighty circleth the\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0world with eye that none deceiveth.\n \u00a0\u00a0May he, all-seeing, well-disposed and holy, give ear
