Griffith, [1895]\n1We will present fair praise unto the Mighty One, our hymns to\n \u00a0\u00a0Indra in Vivasv\u0101n's dwelling-place;\n \u00a0\u00a0For he hath ne'er found wealth in those who seem to sleep;\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0those who give wealth to men accept no paltry praise.\n 2Giver of horses, Indra, giver, thou, of kine, giver of barley,\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0thou art Lord and guard of wealth:\n \u00a0\u00a0Man's helper from of old, not disappointing hope, Friend of\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0our friends, to thee as such we sing this praise.\n 3Indra, most splendid, powerful, rich in mighty deeds, this\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0treasure spread around is known to be thine own.\n \u00a0\u00a0Gather therefrom. O Conqueror, and bring to us: fail not the\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0hope of him who loves and sings to thee.\n 4Well-pleased with these bright flames and with these Soma\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0drops, take thou away our poverty with steeds and kine.\n \u00a0\u00a0With Indra scattering the Dasyu through these drops, freed\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0from their hate may we obtain abundant food.\n 5Let us obtain, O Indra, plenteous wealth and food, with strength\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0exceeding glorious, shining to the sky.\n \u00a0\u00a0May we obtain the Goddess Providence, the strength of heroes,\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0special source of cattle, rich in steeds.\n 6These our libations, strength inspiring Soma draughts, gladdened\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0thee in the fight with Vritra, Hero-Lord, p. 281\n \u00a0\u00a0What time thou slewest for the singer with trimmed grass ten\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0thousand Vritras, thou resistless in thy might.\n 7Thou goest on from fight to fight intrepidly, destroying castle\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0after castle here with strength;\n \u00a0\u00a0Thou Indra, with thy friend who makes the foe bow down,\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0slewest from far away the guileful Namuchi.\n 8Thou hast stuck down in death Karanja, Parnaya, in Atithigva's\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0very glorious going forth:\n \u00a0\u00a0Unyielding, when Rijisvan compassed them with siege, thou hast\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0destroyed the hundred towns of Vangrida.\n 9With all-outstripping chariot wheel, O Indra, thou far-famed,\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0hast overthrown the twice ten kings of men,\n \u00a0\u00a0With sixty thousand nine-and-ninety followers, who came in\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0arms to fight with friendless Susravas.\n 10Thou hast protected Susravas with succour, and T\u016brvay\u0101na with\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0thine aid, O Indra:\n \u00a0\u00a0Thou madest Kutsa, Atithigva, Ayu subject unto this king, the\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0young, the mighty.\n 11May we protected by the Gods hereafter remain thy very pro-\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0sperous friends, O Indra.\n \u00a0\u00a0Thee we extol, enjoying through thy favour life-long and joyful\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0and with store of heroes.","title":"Atharva Veda: Book 20: Hymn 21","type":"page"}
