Griffith, [1895]\n1To him, to him swift, strong, and high-exalted, I bring my song\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0of praise as dainty viands;\n \u00a0\u00a0My thought to him resistless, meet for praises, prayers offered\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0most devotedly to Indra. p. 293\n 2To him I offer praise as choice refreshment, bring forth my song,\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0with seemly laud besiege him.\n \u00a0\u00a0For Indra, Lord of olden time, the singers shall deck their hymns\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0with heart and mind and spirit.\n 3To him then with my lips my song of praises, excellent, winning\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0heavenly light, I offer,\n \u00a0\u00a0To magnify with hymns of invocation and eulogies the Lord,\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0most bounteous Giver.\n 4Even for him I frame a laud\u2014so fashions the wright a chariot\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0for the man who needs it\n \u00a0\u00a0Songs for wise Indra hymned with invocation, a song composed\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0with care and all-impelling.\n 5So with my tongue I deck, to please that Indra, my hymn as't-\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0were a horse, through love of glory,\n \u00a0\u00a0To reverence the Hero, bounteous Giver, famed far and wide,\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0destroyer of the castles.\n 6Even for him hath Tvashtar forged the thunder, most deftly\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0wrought, celestial, for the battle.\n \u00a0\u00a0Wherewith he reached the vital parts of Vritra, striking\u2014the\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0vast, the mighty\u2014with the striker,\n 7As soon as, at libations of his mother, great Vishnu had drunk\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0up the draught, he plundered.\n \u00a0\u00a0The dainty cates, the cooked mess; but One stronger transfixed\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0the wild boar, shooting through the mountain.\n 8To him, to Indra when he slew the Dragon, the Dames too,\n \u00a0\u00a0Consorts of the Gods, wove praises.\n \u00a0\u00a0The mighty heaven and earth hath he encompassed: thy great-\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0ness heaven and earth, combined, exceed not.\n 9Yea, of a truth, his magnitude surpasseth the magnitude of\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0earth, mid-air and heaven.\n \u00a0\u00a0Indra whom all men praise, the Sovran Ruler, waxed in his\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0home loud-voiced and strong for battle.\n 10Through his own strength with bolt of thunder Indra smote\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0piece-meal Vritra, drier up of waters.\n \u00a0\u00a0He let the floods go free, like cows imprisoned, for glory, with\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0a heart inclined to bounty.\n 11Through his resplendent power still stood the rivers when with\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0his bolt on every side he stayed them. p. 294\n \u00a0\u00a0With lordly might favouring him who worshipped, he made a\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0ford, victorious, for Turviti.\n 12Vast, with thine ample power, with eager movement against this\n \u00a0\u00a0Vritra cast thy bolt of thunder.\n \u00a0\u00a0Rend thou his joints, as of an ox dissevered, with bolt oblique\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0that floods of rain may follow.\n 13Sing with new lauds his exploits wrought aforetime, the deeds\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0of him, yea, him who moveth swiftly,\n \u00a0\u00a0When, hurling forth his weapons in the battle, he with impetuous\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0wrath lays low the foemen.\n 14When he, yea, he is born the firm-set mountains and the whole\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0heaven and earth tremble in terror.\n \u00a0\u00a0May Nodhas ever lauding the protection of this dear Friend win\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0straightway strength heroic.\n 15Now unto him of these things hath been given what he, who\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0rules alone o'er much, electeth.\n \u00a0\u00a0Indra helped Etasa, the Soma presser, contending in the chariot-\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0race with S\u016brya.\n 16Thus to thee, Indra, yoker of bay coursers, the Gotamas have\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0brought their prayers and praises.\n \u00a0\u00a0Bestow upon them thought, decked with all beauty.
