N\u00e2rada said :-- O Deva! The rules of Sad\u00e2ch\u00e2ra (right ways of living) and the all-sin-destroying unequalled Glories of the Dev\u00ee Bhagavat\u00ee have been described by Thee. And I, too, have heard the nectar of the Glories of the Dev\u00ee from Thy lotus mouth. The Ch\u00e2ndr\u00e2yana and other Vratas; described by Thee, are very difficult to practise. So they are impracticable with the ordinary persons. Therefore, O Lord! Kindly describe those actions which can easily be carried out by common persons, at the same time, the Dev\u00ee's Grace and Siddhis can be obtained by those practices. Again what thou hast described about the G\u00e2yatr\u00ee in connection with Sad\u00e2ch\u00e2ra kindly say which are the chief and foremost as well as those that are more meritorious. O Best of the Munis! Thou hast told that there are the twenty-four syllables in the G\u00e2yatr\u00ee. Kindly describe now their Risis, Chhandas, Devat\u00e2s and other things that should be known regarding them and thus satisfy my longings.\n8-27. S\u2019r\u00ee N\u00e2r\u00e2yana said :-- O N\u00e2rada! The twice-born would have done what they ought to do if they be engaged in repeating their G\u00e2yatr\u00ee only, whether they be able or not able to practise the Ch\u00e2ndr\u00e2yana and the other vratas. Whichever Br\u00e2hmin repeats the G\u00e2yatr\u00ee three thousand times and offers Arghya to the Sun in the three Sandhy\u00e2 times, the Devas worship him; what to speak of other ordinary persons! Whether he practises Ny\u00e2sa or not, if anybody sincerely repeats the G\u00e2yatr\u00ee Dev\u00ee, Whose Nature is Existence, Intelligence, and Bliss and meditates on Her, even if he attains siddhi in one syllable even, then as a result of that, he can vie with the best of the Br\u00e2hmanas, the Moon, and the Sun; nay, with Brahm\u00e2, Visnu, and Mahes'vara even! O N\u00e2rada! Now I will tell in due order the Risis, Chhandas, and the Devat\u00e2s of the twenty-four syllables of the G\u00e2yatr\u00ee. The Risis, in due order, are (1) V\u00e2ma Deva, (2) Attri, (3) Vas'istha, (4) S\u2019ukra, (5) Kanva, (6) Par\u00e2s'ara, (7) the very fiery Vis'vamitra, (8) Kapila, (9) S\u2019aunaka, (10) Y\u00e2j\u00f1avalkya, (11) Bharadv\u00e2ja, (12) the ascetic Jamadagni, (13) Gautama, (14) Mudgala, (15) Vedavy\u00e2sa, (16) Lomas'a, (17) Agastya, (18) Kaus'ika, (19) Vatsya, (20) Pulastya, (21) M\u00e2nduka, (22) the ascetic in chief Durv\u00e2s\u00e2, (23) N\u00e2rada and (24) Kas'yapa.\nNow about the chhandas :-- (1) G\u00e2yatr\u00ee, (2) Usnik, (3) Anustup, (4) Brihat\u00ee, (5) Pankti, (6) Trisnup, (7) Jagat\u00ee, (8) Atijagat\u00ee, (9) S\u2019akkar\u00ee, (10) Ati S\u2019akkar\u00ee, (11) Dhriti, (12) Ati Dhriti, (13) Vir\u00e2t, (14) Prast\u00e2rapankti, (15) Kriti, (16) Pr\u00e2kriti, (17) \u00c2kriti, (18) Vikriti, (19) Samkriti, (20) Aksarapankti, (21) Bhuh, (22) Bhuvah, (23) Svah and (24) Jyotismat\u00ee. The Devat\u00e2s of the several letters in due order, are :-- (1) Agni, (2) Praj\u00e2pati, (3) Soma, (4) \u00ces'\u00e2na, (5) Savit\u00e2, (6) \u00c2ditya, (7) Brihaspati, (8) Maitr\u00e2varuna, (9) Bhagadeva, (10) Aryam\u00e2, (11) Ganes'a, (12) Tvastr\u00e2, (13) P\u00fbs\u00e2, (14) Indr\u00e2gn\u00ee, (l5) V\u00e2yu, (16) V\u00e2madeva, (17) Maitr\u00e2 varun\u00ee (18) Vis'vadeva, (19) M\u00e2trik\u00e2, (20) Visnu, (21) Vasu, (22) Rudra Deva, (23) Kuvera, and (24) the twin As'vin\u00ee Kum\u00e2ras. O N\u00e2rada! Thus I have described to you about the the Devat\u00e2s of the twenty-four syllables. The hearing of this destroys all sins and yields the full results of repeating the mantra G\u00e2yatr\u00ee.
