{"collection":"Hinduism","html_url":"https://unchartedknowledge.5gfusion.net/browse/hin/rama/ry162.htm","path":"hin/rama/ry162.htm","source_url":"https://sacred-texts.com/hin/rama/ry162.htm","text":"King Guha saw the host spread o'er\n The wide expanse of Gang\u00e1's shore,\n With waving flag and pennon graced,\n And to his followers spoke in haste:\n 'A mighty army meets my eyes,\n That rivals Ocean's self in size:\n Where'er I look my very mind\n No limit to the host can find.\n Sure Bharat with some evil thought\n His army to our land has brought.\n See, huge of form, his flag he rears,\n That like an Ebony-tree appears.\n He comes with bonds to take and chain,\n Or triumph o'er our people slain:\n And after, R\u00e1ma will be slay,--\n Him whom his father drove away:\n The power complete he longs to gain.\n And--task too hard--usurp the reign.\n \n \n So Bharat comes with wicked will\n His brother Rama's blood to spill.\n But R\u00e1ma's slave and friend am I;\n He is my lord and dear ally.\n Keep here your watch in arms arrayed\n Near Gang\u00e1's flood to lend him aid,\n And let my gathered servants stand\n And line with troops the river strand.\n Here let the river keepers meet.\n Who flesh and roots and berries eat;\n A hundred fishers man each boat\n Of the five hundred here afloat,\n And let the youthful and the strong\n Assemble in defensive throng.\n But yet, if, free from guilty thought\n 'Gainst R\u00e1ma, he this land have sought,\n The prince's happy host to day\n Across the flood shall make its way.'\n \u00a0\u00a0 He spoke: then bearing in a dish\n A gift of honey, meat, and fish,\n The king of the Nishadas drew\n Toward Bharat for an interview.\n When Bharat's noble charioteer\n Observed the monarch hastening near,\n He duly, skilled in courteous lore,\n The tidings to his master bore:\n 'This aged prince who hither bends\n His footsteps with a thousand friends,\n Knows, firm ally of R\u00e1ma, all\n That may in Danduk wood befall:\n Therefore, Kakutstha's son, admit\n The monarch, as is right and fit:\n For doubtless he can clearly tell\n Where R\u00e1ma now and Lakshman dwell.'\n \u00a0\u00a0 When Bharat heard Sumantra's rede,\n To his fair words the prince agreed:\n 'Go quickly forth,' he cried, 'and bring\n Before my face the aged king.'\n King Guha, with his kinsmen near,\n Rejoiced the summoning to hear:\n He nearer drew, bowed low his head,\n And thus to royal Bharat said:\n 'No mansions can our country boast,\n And unexpected comes thy host:\n But what we have I give thee all:\n Rest in the lodging of thy thrall.\n See, the Nishadas here have brought\n The fruit and roots their hands have sought:\n And we have woodland fare beside.\n And store of meat both fresh and dried.\n To rest their weary limbs, I pray\n This night at least thy host may stay:\n Then cheered with all we can bestow\n To-morrow thou with it mayst go.'\n \n \n \n \n192:1 Now Sungroor, in the Allahabad district.","title":"Book II: Canto LXXXIV.: Guha's Anger.","type":"page"}
