{"collection":"Hinduism","html_url":"https://unchartedknowledge.5gfusion.net/browse/hin/rama/ry382.htm","path":"hin/rama/ry382.htm","source_url":"https://sacred-texts.com/hin/rama/ry382.htm","text":"Then Jambum\u00e1li, pride and boast\n For valour of the R\u00e1kshas host,\n Prahasta's son supremely brave.\n Obeyed the hest that R\u00e1van gave:\n Fierce warrior with terrific teeth,\n With saguine robes and brilliant wreath.\n A bow like Indra's own \u00a02b, and store\n \n \n Of glittering shafts the chieftain bore.\n And ever as the string he **tried\n The weapon with a roar replied,\n Loud as the crashing thunder sent\n By him who rules the firmament.\n Soon as the foeman came in view\n Borne on a car which asses drew.\n The V\u00e1nar chieftain mighty-voiced\n Shouted in triumph and rejoiced.\n Prahasta's son his bow-string drew,\n And swift the winged arrows flew.\n One in the face the V\u00e1nar smote,\n Another quivered in his throat.\n Ten from the deadly weapon sent\n His brawny aims and shoulders rent.\n Then as he felt each galling shot\n The V\u00e1nar's rage waxed fiercely hot.\n He looked, and saw a mass of stone\n That lay before his feet o'erthrown.\n The mighty block he raised and threw,\n And crashing through the air it flew.\n But Jambumah shunned the blow,\n And rained fresh arrows from his bow.\n The V\u00e1nar's limbs were red with gore:\n A S\u00e1l tree from the earth he tore,\n And, ere he hurled it undismayed,\n Above his head the missile swayed.\n But shafts from Jambumah's bow\n Cut through it ere his hand could throw.\n And thigh and arm and chest and side\n With streams of rushing blood were dyed.\n Still unsubdued though wounded oft\n The shattered trunk he raised aloft,\n And down with well-directed aim\n On Jambumah's chest it came.\n There crushed upon the trampled grass\n He lay an undistinguished mass,\n The foeman's eye no more could see\n His head or chest or arm or knee.\n And bow and car and steeds\u00a01 and store\n Of glittering; shafts were seen no more.\n \u00a0\u00a0 When Jambumah's death he heard,\n King R\u00e1van's heart with rage was stirred\n And forth his general's sons he sent,\n For power and might preeminent.\n \n \n \n \n418:1b Chaityapr\u00e1s\u00e1da is explained by the Commentator as the place where the Gods of the R\u00e1kshases were kept.
