{"collection":"Hinduism","html_url":"https://unchartedknowledge.5gfusion.net/browse/hin/rls/index.htm","path":"hin/rls/index.htm","source_url":"https://sacred-texts.com/hin/rls/index.htm","text":"Ramakrishna (1833-86), was a Bengali Hindu sage.\nAlthough theoretically a high-caste Brahamin by birth,\nhe came from a poor, low-caste village\nand had little or no education.\nHe did not know a word of Sanskrit and his knowledge of the Vedas, Puranas,\nand Hindu Epics was obtained orally (in the Bengali language).\nIn spite of this, he managed to convey in his aphorisms\nthe essence of the Hindu religion.\nRamakrishna also worshipped with Muslims and Christians, and\npropounded a simple approach to religious tolerance:\n\"Creeds and sects matter nothing.\nLet every one perform with faith the devotions and practices of his creed.\nFaith is the only clue to get to God.\" (#200).\nHis often earthy sayings and short fables are immediately comprehensible to\neveryone, using vivid metaphors which\nemploy everyday objects and settings to express deep\nHindu philosophical concepts.\nThis collection of sayings was collected by his followers\nafter his death and translated by Max M\u00fcller.\nPRODUCTION NOTES: this book uses the same transcription system\nas the Sacred Books of the East.\nAlso, I have broken up the sayings,\nwhich comprise one huge chapter in the source\nbook, into four separate files.","title":"Ramakrishna, His Life and Sayings Index","type":"page"}
