There were once three men, well-versed in udg\u00eetha 1, Silaka S\u00e2l\u00e2vatya, Kaikit\u00e2yana, D\u00e2lbhya, and Prav\u00e2hana Gaivali. They said: 'We are well-versed in udg\u00eetha. Let us have a discussion on udg\u00eetha.'\n2. They all agreed and sat down. Then Prav\u00e2hana Gaivali 2 said: 'Sirs, do you both speak first,\nfor I wish to hear what two Br\u00e2hmanas 1 have to say.\n3. Then Silaka S\u00e2l\u00e2vatya said to Kaikit\u00e2yana D\u00e2lbhya: 'Let me ask you.'\n'Ask,' he replied.\n4. 'What is the origin of the S\u00e2man?' 'Tone (svara),' he replied.\n'What is the origin of tone?' 'Breath,' he replied.\n'What is the origin of breath?' 'Food,' he replied.\n'What is the origin of food?' 'Water,' he replied.\n5. 'What is the origin of water?' 'That world (heaven),' he replied.\n'And what is the origin of that world?'--\nHe replied: 'Let no man carry the S\u00e2man beyond the world of svarga (heaven). We place (recognise) the S\u00e2man in the world of svarga, for the S\u00e2man is extolled as svarga (heaven).'\n6. Then said Silaka S\u00e2l\u00e2vatya to Kaikit\u00e2yana D\u00e2lbhya: 'O D\u00e2lbhya, thy S\u00e2man is not firmly established. And if any one were to say, Your head shall fall off (if you be wrong), surely your head would now fall.'\n7. 'Well then, let me know this from you, Sir,' said D\u00e2lbhya.\n'Know it,' replied Silaka S\u00e2l\u00e2vatya.\n'What is the origin of that world (heaven)?' 'This world,' he replied.\n'And what is the origin of this world?'--\nHe replied: 'Let no man carry the S\u00e2man beyond this world as its rest. We place the S\u00e2man\nin this world as its rest, for the S\u00e2man is extolled as rest.'\n8. Then said Prav\u00e2hana Gaivali to Silaka S\u00e2l\u00e2vatya: 'Your S\u00e2man (the earth), O S\u00e2l\u00e2vatya, has an end. And if any one were to say, Your head shall fall off (if you be wrong), surely your head would now fall.'\n'Well then, let me know this from you, Sir,' said S\u00e2l\u00e2vatya.\n'Know it,' replied Gaivali.\n15:1 Cognisant of the deeper meanings of udg\u00eetha, i. e.
