Let a man meditate on the fivefold S\u00e2man 3 as the five worlds. The hi\u1e45k\u00e2ra is, the earth, the prast\u00e2va the fire, the udg\u00eetha the sky, the pratih\u00e2ra the sun, the nidhana heaven; so in an ascending line.\n2. In a descending line, the hi\u1e45k\u00e2ra is heaven,\nthe prast\u00e2va the sun, the udg\u00eetha the sky, the pratih\u00e2ra the fire, the nidhana the earth.\n3. The worlds in an ascending and in a descending line belong to him who knowing this meditates on the fivefold S\u00e2man as the worlds 1.\n23:3 The five forms in which the S\u00e2man is used for sacrificial purposes. The S\u00e2man is always to be under-stood as the Good, as Dharma, and as Brahman.\n24:1 The commentator supplies some fanciful reasons why each of the five S\u00e2mans is identified with certain objects. Earth is said to be the hi\u1e45k\u00e2ra, because both always come first. Agni is prast\u00e2va, because sacrifices are praised in the fire (prast\u00fbyante). The sky is udg\u00eetha, because it is also called gagana, and both words have the letter g in common. The sun is pratih\u00e2ra, because everybody wishes the sun to come towards him (prati).
