The chest which has the sky for its circumference and the earth for its bottom, does not decay, for the quarters are its sides, and heaven its lid above. That chest is a treasury, and all things are within it.\n2. Its eastern quarter is called Guh\u00fb, its southern Saham\u00e2n\u00e2, its western R\u00e2g\u00f1\u00ee, its northern Subh\u00fbt\u00e2 2. The child of those quarters is V\u00e2yu, the air, and he who knows that the air is indeed the child of the quarters, never weeps for his sons. 'I know the wind to be the child of the quarters, may I never weep for my sons.'\n3. 'I turn to the imperishable chest with such and such and such 3.' 'I turn to the Pr\u00e2na (life) with such and such and such.' 'I turn to Bh\u00fbh with such and such and such.' 'I turn to Bhuvah with such and such and such.' 'I turn to Svah with such and such and such.'\n4. 'When I said, I turn to Pr\u00e2na, then Pr\u00e2na means all whatever exists here--to that I turn.'\n5. 'When I said, I turn to Bh\u00fbh, what I said is, I turn to the earth, the sky, and heaven.'\n6. 'When I said, I turn to Bhuvah, what I said is, I turn to Agni (fire), V\u00e2yu (air), \u00c2ditya (sun).'\n7. 'When I said, I turn to Svah, what I said is, I turn to the Rig-veda, Yagur-veda, and S\u00e2ma-veda. That is what I said, yea, that is what I said.'\n49:1 The object of this section, the Kosavig\u00f1\u00e2na, is to show how the promise made in III, 13, 6, 'that a strong son should be born in a man's family,' is to be fulfilled.\n49:2 These names are explained by the commentator as follows: Because people offer libations (guhvati), turning to the east, therefore it is called Guh\u00fb. Because evil doers suffer (sahante) in the town of Yama, which is in the south, therefore it is called Saham\u00e2n\u00e2. The western quarter is called R\u00e2g\u00f1\u00ee, either because it is sacred to king Varuna (r\u00e2gan), or on account of the red colour (r\u00e2ga) of the twilight.
