After one year (the teacher) recites the S\u00e2vitr\u00ee (to the student),\n2. (Or) after three nights,\n3. Or immediately.\n4 4-6. Let him recite a G\u00e2yatr\u00ee to a Br\u00e2hmana,\n5. A Trishtubh to a Kshatriya,\n6. A Gagat\u00ee to a Vaisya.\n7. But let it be anyhow a verse sacred to Savitar.\n8. They seat themselves to the north of the fire,\n9 9. The teacher with his face turned eastward, the other westward.\n10 10-11. After (the student) has said, 'Recite, sir!'\u2014\n11. The teacher, having pronounced the word OM, then causes the other one to say, 'Recite the S\u00e2vitr\u00ee, sir!'\n12. He then recites the S\u00e2vitr\u00ee to him, the verse 'That glorious (splendour) of Savitar' (Rig-Veda III, 62, 10); (firstly) p\u00e2da by p\u00e2da, (then) hemistich by hemistich, (and finally) without a stop.\n66:1 5, 1. The study of the Veda is opened by the S\u00e2vitr\u00ee. Comp. Satapatha Br\u00e2hmana, loc. cit., \u00a7\u00a7 6 seq.\n66:4-6 The G\u00e2yatr\u00ee which the teacher shall recite to a Br\u00e2hmana is the same verse of which it is said below, chap. q, II, that it belongs to Visv\u00e2mitra (Rig-veda III, 62, to); the Trishtubh which is taught to the Kshatriya is a verse ascribed to Hiranyast\u00fbpa, Rig-veda I, 35, 2; the Gagat\u00ee which is to be repeated to a Vaisya is Rig-veda IV, 40, 5, belonging to V\u00e2madeva, or Rig-veda I, 35, 9, belonging to Hiranyast\u00fbpa. See the note on chap. 7, 10.\n66:9 The same position is prescribed, in the same words, for the study of the main part of the Veda, below, chap. 7, 3; during p. 67 the study of the \u00c2ranyaka the position is slightly different (VI, 3, 2). According to N\u00e2r\u00e2yana this S\u00fbtra would contain a nishedha of the S\u00fbtras 828 and 829 of the Rig-veda-Pr\u00e2tis\u00e2khya (p. ccxcii of Professor Max M\u00fcller's edition).\n67:10-11 10, 11. The Indian tradition divides these S\u00fbtras after \u00e2k\u00e2ryah, so that the words adh\u00eehi bho would have to be pronounced by the teacher. Thus also N\u00e2r\u00e2yana explains, \u00e2k\u00e2rya adh\u00eehi bho 3 iti m\u00e2navakam uktv\u00e2, &c. In my opinion it is the student or the students who say adh\u00eehi bho. Thus the Pr\u00e2tis\u00e2khya (S\u00fbtra 831, ed. Max M\u00fcller) says, 'They invite him with the words adh\u00eehi bho 3, all the students the teacher, having embraced his feet.'
