Now after they have entered the circle\u2014\n2 2-3. The teacher sits down with his face to the east, the others, according to their rank, (sit down) towards the south, with their faces to the north.\n3. If that is impossible, with their faces to all directions.\n4. Let them expect the rising of the sun,\n5. And when they behold it in its splendour,\n6 6. Let them with (the words), 'Recite, sir!' seize with their hands, holding the right hand uppermost, the feet of the teacher, which have been washed, with the right (hand) the right (foot), with the left the left,\n7 7. And having then put (the hands) into the vessel used for the expiation, into water in which pieces of D\u00fbrv\u00e2 stalks are, let them begin their study, when their hands have ceased to drip.\n8. This is the rite. But when they are tired, let one of them bring it about that the vessel used for the expiation be not empty.\n9. And all (should do so) at the beginning and the end of (each) Adhy\u00e2ya.\n10 10. (All) that is done continuously, without interruption.\n11. Now the expiation.\n12 12. The syllable OM, the Mah\u00e2vy\u00e2hritis, the S\u00e2vitr\u00ee, the Rathantara, the Brihat, the V\u00e2madevya; Brihat and Rathantara with repetition and Kakubh-forming.\n13 13. These (holy words and verses) are (thus) made to attain (the number of) ten.\n14 14. 'Of decades consists the Vir\u00e2g'\u2014thus says the Br\u00e2hmana.\n143:2-3 3, 2, 3. Comp. IV, 8, 2-4.\n144:6 Comp. above, II, 5, 10, &c.\n144:7 The translation of apinvam\u00e2naih p\u00e2nibhih is conjectural. N\u00e2r\u00e2yana's explanation of apinvam\u00e2na by asamsrishta is inadmissible.\n144:10 N\u00e2r\u00e2yana explains this S\u00fbtra in the following way. if it is impossible, for any reason, to recite the whole text, only the beginning and the concluding words of each Adhy\u00e2ya (see S\u00fbtra 9) are to be repeated; and these should be recited without interruption so as to form one continual text.\n144:12 Comp. above, III, 4, 5.\n145:13 The G\u00e2yatr\u00ee is one verse; the Rathantara and the Brihat are Prag\u00e2thas which are changed in the usual way into Trikas; the V\u00e2madevya is one Trika: thus the number of ten is obtained.\n145:14 Kaush.
