A student after he has studied the Veda and has offered a present to his teacher, should, with permission (of his parents), take a wife.\n2 2. And (he should take) the bath (which signifies the end of studentship).\n3 3-4. Of these two (acts the taking of) the bath comes first.\n3, 1. brahmak\u00e2r\u00ee vedam adh\u00eetyopany\u00e2hritya gurave\u093dnug\u00f1\u00e2to d\u00e2r\u00e2n kurv\u00eet\u00e2. 2. \u093dplavana\u00f1 ka. 3. tayor \u00e2plavanam p\u00fbrvam.\n4. As, however, in the (collection of) Mantras marriage is treated of (first), it is explained (here) before (the bath).\n5 5. A Br\u00e2hmana with a water-pot, wrapped in his robe, keeping silence, should step in front of the fire and should station himself (to the south of it) with his face to the north.\n6 6. After (the bride) has taken a bath, (the bridegroom) should dress her in a garment that has not yet been washed, with (the verse), 'They who spun' (MB. I, 1, 5). While she is led up (to him), the bridegroom should murmur (the verse), 'Soma gave her' (l.l. 7).\n7 7. To the south of the bridegroom he (who has led her to him) should make her sit down.\n8. While she touches him, (the bridegroom) should make oblations of \u00c2gya with the Sruva, picking out (portions of it [comp. P\u00e2raskara II, 14, 131), with the Mah\u00e2vy\u00e2hritis.\n9. A fourth (oblation) with (the three Mah\u00e2vy\u00e2hritis) together.\n10. The same at the ceremonies of the tonsure (of the child's head), of the initiation (of the Brahmak\u00e2rin), and of the cutting of the beard.\n4. mantr\u00e2bhiv\u00e2d\u00e2t tu p\u00e2nigrahanasya (correct, p\u00e2nigrahanam?) p\u00fbrvam vy\u00e2khy\u00e2tam. 5. br\u00e2hmanas sahodakumbhah pr\u00e2vrito v\u00e2gyato\u093dgren\u00e2gnim gatvoda\u1e45mukhas tishthet. 6. sn\u00e2t\u00e2m ahaten\u00e2kh\u00e2dya y\u00e2 akrintann ity \u00e2n\u00eeyam\u00e2n\u00e2y\u00e2m p\u00e2nigr\u00e2hogapet Somo\u093ddadad iti. 7. p\u00e2nigr\u00e2hasya dakshinata upavesayed. 8. anv\u00e2rabdh\u00e2y\u00e2m sruvenopagh\u00e2tam mah\u00e2vy\u00e2hritibhir \u00e2gyam guhuy\u00e2t. 9. samast\u00e2bhis katurth\u00eem. 10. evam kaulopanayanagod\u00e2neshv.\n11. And at the marriage (he makes oblations) with the six verses, 'May Agni go as the first' (MB. I, I, 9 seqq.).\n12. At \u00c2gya oblations, unless a special rule is given, the two \u00c2gya portions and the Svishtakrit oblation (are) not (offered).\n13. After (the chief oblations he should) always (make oblations) with the Mah\u00e2vy\u00e2hritis,\n14 14-15. And with the (verse) sacred to Prag\u00e2pati.\n15. He should make an expiatory oblation.\n16 16-31. After the sacrifice they both arise.\n17. (The bridegroom) should pass behind (the bride's) back, station himself to the south, and seize the bride's hand.\n18. Her mother who has, towards the east, put fried grain mixed with Sam\u00ee leaves into a basket,\n19. Should make the bride tread with the tip of her right foot on an upper mill-stone, to the west of the fire, with (the verse which the bridegroom repeats), 'On this stone' (MB. I, 2, 1).\n20. Her brother, filling once his joined hands\n11. Agnir etu prathama iti shadbhis ka p\u00e2nigrahane. 12. n\u00e2gyabh\u00e2gau na svishtakrid \u00e2gy\u00e2hutishv an\u00e2dese. 13. sarvatroparisht\u00e2n mah\u00e2vy\u00e2hritibhih 1. 14. pr\u00e2g\u00e2patyay\u00e2 ka. 15. pr\u00e2yaskittam guhuy\u00e2d. 16. dhutvopottishthato. 17. \u093dnuprishtham gatv\u00e2 dakshinato\u093dvasth\u00e2ya vadhva\u00f1galim grihn\u00eey\u00e2t. 18. p\u00fbrv\u00e2 m\u00e2t\u00e2 sam\u00eepal\u00e2samisr\u00e2n (var. lect. \u00b0misr\u00e2l) l\u00e2g\u00e2\u00f1 kh\u00fbrpe kritv\u00e2. 19. pask\u00e2d agner drishatputram \u00e2kramayed vadh\u00fbm dakshinena prapadenemam asm\u00e2nam iti. 20. sakridgrih\u00eetam a\u00f1galim l\u00e2g\u00e2n\u00e2m vadhva\u00f1gal\u00e2v \u00e2vaped bhr\u00e2t\u00e2.\nwith fried grain, should pour it into the bride's joined hands.\n21 21. Or some friend (instead of the brother).\n22. That she should sacrifice over the fire without opening her joined hands with (the verse which the bridegroom repeats), 'This woman' (MB. I, 2, 2).\n23. (The verses), 'Aryaman' and 'P\u00fbshan' (l.l. 3, 4) (are repeated) at the two following (oblations of fried grain).\n24. After that sacrifice he should go back in the same way (see S\u00fbtra 17), and should lead her round the fire, so that their right sides are turned towards it with (the formula), 'The maid from the fathers' (l.l. 5).\n25. (These rites), beginning from his stationing himself (to the south, S\u00fbtra 17), (are performed) thrice.\n26. After (she) has poured the remnants (of the fried grain) into the fire, he should make her step forward in a north-eastern direction with (the formula), 'For sap with one step' (l.l. 6, 7).\n27. The looking at the lookers-on, the mounting of the chariot, the reciting (of Mantras) at places difficult to pass (on the way of the bridegroom and the bride, is performed) with (verses) suited (to those different occasions).\n21. suhrid v\u00e2 kaskit. 22. tam s\u00e2gnau guhuy\u00e2d avikhidy\u00e2\u00f1galim iyam n\u00e2r\u00eety. 23. Walking forward behind the fire, the water-carrier (see S\u00fbtra 5) should besprinkle the bridegroom on his forehead.\n29. So also the bride.\n30. When he has thus been besprinkled, (he should repeat the verse), 'May (the Visve dev\u00e2s) anoint (or, unite)' (MB. I, 2, 9).\n31. He should seize her right hand, together with the thumb, with the six (verses), 'I seize thy hand' (MB.
