When (the student) is going to take the bath (at the end of his studentship), he seats himself in an enclosure to the east of his teacher's house.\n2. The teacher (sits) facing the north,\n3. On eastward-pointed (Darbha-grass).\n4. Thus one (should act) who is desirous of holy lustre.\n5. (The student should sit) in a cow-stable, if he is desirous of cattle,\n6. In an assembly-hall, if desirous of renown.\n7. Let him boil water with all kinds of herbs,\n8. And with scents.\n9. With that water, which must be lukewarm, the teacher should besprinkle (the student).\n10. Or (the student should do so) himself, because that is signified by the Mantra.\n11. Some say that both (should do so).\n12. The teacher should say (in the Mantra), 'Therewith (I besprinkle) him,' (instead of, 'Therewith I besprinkle myself').\n13. With (the verses), 'Which in the waters' (MB. I, 7, 1) (the student) should pour out his joined hands full of water;\nIII, 1, 1. \u00e2plavane purast\u00e2d \u00e2k\u00e2ryakulasya parivrita \u00e2sta. 2. uda\u1e45mukha \u00e2k\u00e2ryah. 3. pr\u00e2gagreshv. 4. evam brahmavarkasak\u00e2mo. 5. goshthe pasuk\u00e2mas. 6. sabh\u00e2y\u00e2m yasask\u00e2mah. 7. sarvaushadhen\u00e2pah ph\u00e2nayet. 8. surabhibhis ka. 9. t\u00e2bhis s\u00eetoshn\u00e2bhir \u00e2k\u00e2ryo\u093dbhishi\u00f1ket. 10. svayam v\u00e2 mantr\u00e2bhiv\u00e2d\u00e2d. 11. ubh\u00e2v ity eke. 12. tenemam ity \u00e2k\u00e2ryo br\u00fby\u00e2d. 13. ye apsv ity ap\u00e2m a\u00f1galim avasi\u00f1ked.\n14. And with (the formula), 'What (is dreadful) in the waters' (l.l. 2);\n15. And silently.\n16. With (the formula), 'The shining one' (l.l. 3), he should draw (some water) and should besprinkle himself (therewith);\n17. And with (the verse), 'By which the wife' (l.l. 5);\n18. And silently.\n19. With (the formulas), 'Rising' (l.l. 6-8), he should worship the sun.\n20. He may repeat (the sections of that Mantra) continuously.\n21. If he repeats them separately, he should add at the end (of each section), 'The eye art thou' (l.l. 9).\n22. With (the verse), 'Loosen the highest' (l.l. 10), he should take off the girdle.\n23. After he has eaten something, he should have his hair, his beard, the hair of his body, and his nails cut, so as to leave the lock of hair (as required by the custom of his family).\n24. Having adorned himself and put on clothes which have not yet been washed, he should put a garland (on his head) with (the formula), 'Luck' (l.l. 11).\n25. The two shoes (he puts on) with (the formula), Leaders are you' (l.l. 12).\n14. yad ap\u00e2m iti ka. 15. t\u00fbshn\u00ee\u00f1 ka. 16. yo rokana iti grihy\u00e2tm\u00e2nam abhishi\u00f1ked. 27. yena striyam iti ka. 18. t\u00fbshn\u00ee\u00f1 ko. 19. \u093ddyann ity \u00e2dityam upatishthet. 20. samasyed v\u00e2. 21. viharann anusamharek kakshur as\u00eety. 22. ud uttamam iti mekhal\u00e2m avamu\u00f1ket. 23. pr\u00e2sya v\u00e2payek khik\u00e2vargam kesasmasrulomanakh\u00e2ny. 24. alamkrito\u093dhatav\u00e2sas\u00e2 sr\u00eer iti sragam pratimu\u00f1ken. 25. netryau stha ity up\u00e2nahau.\n26. With (the formula), 'The Gandharva art thou' (l.l. 13), he takes a bamboo staff.\n27. He should approach the teacher and look at the assembly (of pupils, &c.) with (the formula), 'Like an eye-ball' (l.l. 14).\n28. Sitting down, he should touch the sense-organs at his head with (the Mantra), 'Covered by the lips' (l.l. I5).\n29. Let him touch a chariot yoked with oxen, with (the verse), 'O tree' (l.l. 16).\n30. With (the words), 'He who stands on thee' (l.l. 16), he should mount it.\n31. Having driven (some distance) in an eastern or northern direction, he should turn round from left to right.\n32. Some say that when he has come back, (his teacher should offer to him) the Argha reception.\n33 33-44. From that time he shall assume a dignified demeanour.\n34. n\u00e2g\u00e2talomnyopah\u00e2sam ikkhet.\n35. Nor (should he wish for sport) with a girl who is the only child of her mother,\n36. Nor with a woman during her courses,\n37. Nor with (a woman) who descends from the same Rishis.\n38. Let him not eat food which has been brought\n26. vainavam dandam \u00e2dady\u00e2d Gandharvo\u093ds\u00eety. 27. upety\u00e2k\u00e2ryam parishadam prekshed yaksham ivety. 28. upavisyaushth\u00e2pidh\u00e2neti mukhy\u00e2n pr\u00e2n\u00e2n abhimrised. 29. goyuktam ratham \u00e2labhed vanaspata ity. 30. \u00e2sth\u00e2t\u00e2 ta ity \u00e2rohet. 31. pr\u00e2k\u00eem pray\u00e2yod\u00eek\u00eem v\u00e2 gatv\u00e2 pradakshinam \u00e2vartayet. 32. praty\u00e2gat\u00e2y\u00e2rghyam ity eke. 33. vriddhas\u00eeli sy\u00e2d ata \u00fbrdhvam. 34. n\u00e2g\u00e2talomnyopah\u00e2sam ikkhen. 35. n\u00e2yugy\u00e2 (read, n\u00e2yugv\u00e2). 36. na ragasvalay\u00e2. 37. na sam\u00e2narshy\u00e2. 38. \u093dparay\u00e2 dv\u00e2r\u00e2 prapannah (read, prapanna-) dvihpakvaparyushit\u00e2ni n\u00e2sn\u00eey\u00e2d.\nby another door (than the usual), or which has been cooked twice, or which has stood over-night\u2014\n39. Except such as is prepared of vegetables, flesh, barley, or flour\u2014\n40. Or of milk.\n41. He shall avoid gathering fruits, looking into wells, running while it is raining, and taking his shoes in his hands.\n42. He should not wear a scentless wreath,\n43. If it is not a wreath of gold.\n44. He should not use the word 'blessed' without a reason.\n45 45-52. If he is desirous of thriving (in his cattle), he should with (the Mantra), 'May these' (MB. I, 8, 1) have his cows driven out.\n46. When they have come back, (he should recite the Mantra), 'These which are rich in sweet' (l.l. 2).\n47. If he is desirous of thriving (in his cattle), he should lick the forehead of the first-born calf, before it is licked by its mother, and should gulp with (the formula), ('Thou art the phlegm) of the cows' (l.l. 3).\n48. When the cows have calved, he should at night sacrifice in the cow-stable churned curds with drops of ghee, with (the verse), 'Seizer' (l.l. 4).\n39. anyatra s\u00e2kam\u00e2msayavapishtavik\u00e2rebhyah. 40. p\u00e2yas\u00e2k ka. 41. phalaprakayanodap\u00e2n\u00e2vekshanavarshatidh\u00e2vanop\u00e2natsvayamharan\u00e2ni na kury\u00e2n. 42. n\u00e2gandh\u00e2m sragam dh\u00e2rayen. 43. na ked dhiranyasrag. 44. bhadram iti na vrith\u00e2 vy\u00e2haret. 45. pushtik\u00e2mo g\u00e2h prak\u00e2layed im\u00e2 ma iti. 46. praty\u00e2gat\u00e2 im\u00e2 madhumat\u00eer iti. 47. pushtik\u00e2ma eva prathamag\u00e2tasya vatsasya pr\u00e2\u1e45 m\u00e2tuh pralehan\u00e2l lal\u00e2tam ullihya nigired gav\u00e2m iti. 48. samprag\u00e2t\u00e2su goshthe nis\u00e2y\u00e2m vilayana\u00f1 guhuy\u00e2t samgrahanety.\n49. Now another (ceremony). He should make marks on the ears of a male and of a female calf with (the formula), 'The world art thou' (l.l. 5, 6).\n50. First on the male.\n51. He should recite over them (the Mantra), 'With metal' (l.l. 7).\n52.
