On the middle (Ashtak\u00e2) a cow (is sacrificed).\n4, 1. madhyam\u00e2y\u00e2m gaus.\n2. He should place that (cow) to the east of the fire, facing the west, and should sacrifice (\u00c2gya) with (the verse), 'What, O beasts' (MB. II, 2, 5).\n3. After having made that oblation he should recite over (the cow the verse), 'May to thee' (l.l. 6).\n4. Let him sprinkle it with water in which barley is, with (the formula), 'Agreeable to the Ashtak\u00e2 I sprinkle thee!'\n5. Having sprinkled it and carried a fire-brand round it, he should give the Prokshan\u00ee water (to the cow) to drink.\n6. Going in a northern direction (from the fire) he should kill (the cow), the head of which is turned to the west, the feet to the north.\n7. After it has been killed, he should sacrifice (\u00c2gya) with (the verse), 'If the beast' (l.l. 8).\n8. His wife should wash the apertures of its body.\n9. After (the cow's body) has been opened, so that two purifiers (i.e. grass-blades) have been put under (the knife), he should have the omentum drawn out.\n10. Seizing it with one branch and with another forked branch of a sacrificially pure tree he should roast it.\n11. When it has ceased to drop, he should hew (the cow) to pieces.\n2. tam purast\u00e2d agneh pratya\u1e45mukh\u00eem avasth\u00e2pya guhuy\u00e2d yat pasava iti. 3. hutv\u00e2 k\u00e2numantrayet\u00e2nu tveti. 4. yavamat\u00eebhir adbhih prokshed ashtak\u00e2yai tv\u00e2 gushtam (correct, gusht\u00e2m) proksh\u00e2m\u00eeti. 5. prokshyolmukena parihritya prokshan\u00eeh p\u00e2yayed. 6. uda\u1e45\u1e45 utsripya pratyaksirasam (\u00b0sim, \u00b0s\u00eem the MSS.) udakpad\u00eem samg\u00f1apayet. 7. samg\u00f1apt\u00e2y\u00e2m guhuy\u00e2d yat pasur iti. 8. tasy\u00e2h patn\u00ee srot\u00e2msi praksh\u00e2layet. 9. pavitre antardh\u00e2yotkritya vap\u00e2m uddh\u00e2rayed. 10. yag\u00f1iyasya vrikshasya vis\u00e2kh\u00e2s\u00e2kh\u00e2bhy\u00e2m parigrihy\u00e2gnau srapayet. 11. prasrit\u00e2y\u00e2m visased.\n12. The 'spreading under' and sprinkling (\u00c2gya) on (the omentum) has been described. (It is clone) as at the Svishtakrit oblation (see II, 1, 24).\n13. He should sacrifice with (the formula), 'To the Ashtak\u00e2 Sv\u00e2h\u00e2!'\n14 14-24. The Avad\u00e2nas (or portions which have to be cut off) he should have taken from all its limbs.\n15. Not from the left thigh and the lungs.\n16. The left thigh he keeps (for the Anvashtakya).\n17. He should cook the Avad\u00e2nas and a mess of sacrificial food, (stirring up the ones and the other) with two different pot-ladles.\n18. The juice he lets drop into a brazen vessel.\n19. The Avad\u00e2nas he puts on branches of the Plaksha tree.\n20. From each (Avad\u00e2na) he should cut off (the prescribed portions, and should put them) into a brazen vessel;\n21. And from the mess of cooked food.\n22. Let him take four portions or eight portions of \u00c2gya (?) and let him sacrifice it with (the verses), 'Into Agni' (MB. II, 2, 9 seqq.).\n23. Let him make oblations out of the brazen vessel, each oblation with two of the following (verses).\n12. uktam upastaran\u00e2bhigh\u00e2ranam yath\u00e2 svishtakrito. 13. \u093dshtak\u00e2yai sv\u00e2heti guhuy\u00e2t. 14. sarv\u00e2\u1e45gebhyo\u093dvad\u00e2n\u00e2ny uddh\u00e2rayen. 15. na savy\u00e2t sakthno na klomnah. 16. savyam sakthi nidh\u00e2ya. 17. pritha\u1e45 mekshan\u00e2bhy\u00e2m avad\u00e2n\u00e2ni sth\u00e2l\u00eep\u00e2ka\u00f1 ka srapayitv\u00e2. 18. kamse rasam prasr\u00e2vya. 19. plakshas\u00e2kh\u00e2sv avad\u00e2n\u00e2ni kritvai. 20. \u093dkaikasm\u00e2t kamse\u093dvadyet. 21. sth\u00e2l\u00eep\u00e2k\u00e2k ka. 22. katurgrih\u00eetam ashtagrih\u00eetam v\u00e2tra (v\u00e2gyam? v\u00e2tram, v\u00e2tra the MSS.) guhuy\u00e2d Agn\u00e2v iti. 23. kams\u00e2t par\u00e2bhir dv\u00e2bhy\u00e2m dv\u00e2bhy\u00e2m ekaik\u00e2m \u00e2hutim.\n24. The oblation to (Agni) Svishtakrit with the eighth (verse).\n25 25-28. At a sacrifice to the Fathers the omentum is sacrificed with (the verse), 'Carry the omentum' (MB. II, 3, 16).\n26. At one to the gods with (the verse), 'G\u00e2tavedas!' (l.l. 17.)\n27. If (the deity is) unknown, (in the formula for) assigning (the oblation, instead of the name of a deity the name of) that (ceremony is put)\u2014\n28. As (for instance), 'To the Ashtak\u00e2.'\n29. An animal is the sacrificial fee at (the sacrifice of) an animal;\n30 30. A full vessel at (that of) a mess of cooked food.\n24. sauvishtakritam ashtamy\u00e2. 25. vaha vap\u00e2m iti pitrye vap\u00e2homo. 26.
